Such hemorrhages happen in oonsequenceof the vessels uniting the ovum to the uterus, being torn, eitherbecause the natural resistance of the uterus against its contentstoo great, or because the resistance of the contents against theof the uterus is too feeble. In this way the uterus is excited topremature contractions which may easily superinduce a lacerationof the vessels for the reason that in the first three months theis on its whole surface connected with the uterus by m^eans of vedelicate blood-vessels. Hence miscarriages take place most easilyduring the first three months of pregnancy. If the afteralready formed, premature contractions likewise lead to the lacertion and detachment of the placental vessel*. This, however, is oless frequent occurrence, because the contractions affect only asmaller portion of the uteitia, and it iff moreover well known ththe normal seat of the placenta is not the locality usually afieeby the ctrntractions, but that they are much more commonly eonMetrorrhagisu 69fined to the lower portion of the uterus. It is all-important thathe circumstances which cause premature contractions of the uterushould be carefully investigated; a miscarriage can only he prevented by keeping all such exciting causes out of the way. Thecauses of miscarriage either proceed from the footus in consequenof its premature death, or from the mother. The death of thefoetus is superinduced by intensely-debilitating diseases of themother, especially a far advanced anaemia ; next by constitutionasyphilis, and finally by violent commotions such as fright. Tojudge by the changes which are sometimes noticed in the foetus, iwould seem as though certain poisonous substances which will benamed by and by, might exert a destructive influence over it. Asproceeding from the mother, we have the various circumstancesthat tend to cause a determination of blood to the uterus, and whhave already been named in the chapter on acute uterine catarrh.Plethoric individuals are much more liable to miscarriage thanansemic women, especially if the former are afflicted with profusmenstruation. In their case the hemorrhage is apt to appear at thtime of the catamenia. Acute febrile afiections and diseases of theart likewise predispose to miscarriage. Mechanical causes actinupon the sexual organs directly, or transmitting their effect upothe uterus by a general concussion of the system, exert a peculiainjurious influence ; so do depressing mental causes when aftectithe uterus unceasingly. It is well known that women who, althoughagain pregnant, continue to nurse their children, become liable tmiscarriage on account of the excited condition of the uterus tramitted to this organ from the excited nipple. Lastly we have tomention various poisons which are sometimes resorted to for thecriminal purpose of producing miscarriage. These are Sahina^CrofmSy Seoale comutum. Sabina is so frequently used as a meansof producing abortion, that the Juniperus Sabina which grows inthe neighborhood of large cities, is usually found pulled to piechttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
