In short, the whole complex <strong>of</strong> thepathological phenomena points to Digitalis as our first choice intreatment <strong>of</strong> these disorganizations. Digitalis is even indicatedJ392 Diseases <strong>of</strong> the Heart.the peculiar pneumonia which is not unfrequently favored and evenexcited by the stenosis <strong>of</strong> the left auriculo-ventricular orifice.1^3t the remedy be administered in a small dose ; this is <strong>of</strong> paraimportance. Even if large doses seem to agree at the beginning,yet in the long run they exert a decidedly pernicious influence.We advise the use <strong>of</strong> Belladonna in all cases where Aconitumseems indicated by the symptoms. In this kind <strong>of</strong> disorder Aconitenever exerts a favorable influence. Belladonna is especially indiby the paroxysmally increasing pulmonary hypersemia and theheadache which sometimes reaches a terrible degree <strong>of</strong> intensity.It is less frequently eificacious in the resulting hepatic derangments.Pulsatilla cannot be numbered among the prominent remedies;we would at most employ it in the higher grades <strong>of</strong> bronchialcatarrh.Veratrum album competes with Belladonna as far as the affectedorgans are concerned ; yet there are symptomatic difterences. Itsuitable for cerebral and pulmonary congestions setting in withpallor and coldness <strong>of</strong> the outer skin, or with a decidedly cyanottinge.Opium, in small doses, in the case <strong>of</strong> drunkards is a main remedyfor celebral hyperoemia, less for the respiratory difficulties. Icases it <strong>of</strong>ten acts with wonderful rapidity and completeness,although the effect does not last.Tartarus stibiatus is indicated by bronchial catarrh with pr<strong>of</strong>usesecretion <strong>of</strong> mucus, and by a gastric catarrh the symptoms <strong>of</strong> whicmay be compared in the Mat. Med. Pura.Arsenicum which seems indicated much more frequently than itreally is, has only shown a decisive eftect in our hands againstsleeplessness which is a not uncommon symptom in these disordersit has never seemed to be <strong>of</strong> any use in affections <strong>of</strong> the respiraorgans for which it seems such an excellent remedy if these afiections are not occasioned by valvular defects. Nor does it ordinarseem to have any eftect .in drojmcal difficulties.<strong>The</strong> remedies we have named so far, are in general adapted onlyto overcoming single ailments either acute or subacute; to this lwe will add the following: Phosphorus^ Squilla^ Secale cornutuitilodium^ Ammonhim carbonictim.
