Phosphorus is possessed of extraordinary curative powers against ODdema, and it alone is almost always sufficito subdue this complication. If pneumonia attacks tuberculous individuals, it is, with someexceptions, a distinguished remedy. Tuberculosis must not yet havassumed the form of phthisis, the patients must not manifest anygreat disposition to hemorrhage, and their strength must not yetLave become too much reduced.Among the complications, the presence of intestinal catarrh pointvery forcibly to Phosphorus. We stated above that this complication leads most easily and speedily to collapse, for which alonephorus is such an excellent remedy. On the other hand, it is ouropinion that a prominent gastric catarrh almost counter-Phosphorus. The very common and sometimes threatening complication with hypenemia of the liver and slight icterus is a decindication for Phosphorus. To these indications we have to add a few considerations whichare, in our estimation, additional recommendations for PhosphorusOne of them is the patient's age. Neither very young, nor veryold individuals are best calculated for the favorable action of Pphorus, nor are individuals with exhausted constitutions ; robustmiddle-aged persons are most susceptible to the restorative actioof this agent. We should never employ Phosphorus in pneumoniarunning the above-described normal course ; but the patient shoulbe visited at least twice a day, for the symptoms sometimes undera most remarkable change in twelve hours, and the right periodwhen Phosphorus ought to be given, is easily missed. If pneumonia is complicated with a higher grade of pleuritis (for it is alalways associated with some of the lighter grades of this diseasePhosphorus is, in our opinion, much less appropriate than otherremedies, and we feel unable to accede to the opinion of somehomoeopatic practitioners who regard Phosphorus as peculiarlysuitable to pleuritis. In the third stage. Phosphorus is apparentappropriate, but we deem it proper at this stage to recommendother remedies more urgently. In chronic pneumonia we havenever seen Phosphorus do any good. Regarding the dose, we desireto state that we have never seen an aggravation caused by ten ortweve drops of the third attenuation in two ounces of water, givein dessertspoonful-doses; but that the second attenuation is veryeasily succeeded by the production of primary symptoms, especiall276 Diseases of the Lungs.an increase of hypereemia, even hemorrhage, more particularly mthe case of tuberculous iudividuals. As far as higher attenuationare concerned, we confess that we have never witnessed any effectfrom any above the sixth. [Some years ago we had an opportunityof witnessing a very beautiful and striking effect of Phosphorus. Some time during the summer, late in the evening, we were summoned by a farmer who complained of a severe stitch in the side. The patient was of a consumptive habit of body, forty-five yearsold ; we found him lying on the sofa, with a high fever, short anhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
