In such cases Snl'phvr shows an extraordinary persistence of penetrating action;we advise, however, the use of high attenuations at protractedintervals. This action of Sulphur is most easily accounted for bythe supposition, that the pneumonic exudation which, as was saidabove, takes place progressively from one portion of lung to thenext adjoining, still exists either entirely or in part, keepingpatient's illness, and that it is this exudation which is reabsorby the aid of this drug. Calcarea carbonica likewise has often avery excellent effect in this protracted course of the disease, eif slight febrile motionB or even hectic fever with intestinal casupervene, or if infantile organisms are attacked. As for Heparsulphuris we have not yet had an opportunity of trying this remedin a pathological condition of this kind, but we deem it essentiaadapted to it and worthy of a trial. We shall discuss typhoid pneumonia when we come to treat ofthe typhoid process generally. Typhoid pneumonia is a partialmanifestation of typhus, scarcely ever an idiopathic disease. Theinflammatory processes in the lungs depending upon tuberculosiswill likewise be discussed in the chapter on tuberculosis. The pneumonia of drunkards is almost always characterized bypeculiar phenomena depending upon sympathetic cerebral andcardiac irritation and a deficiency of reactive power. The cerebrsymptoms mostly point to Opium^ much less frequently to Nuzvomica. In the second stage Tarta7'us enieiicus occupies a prominpart. Phosphorus is less frequently useful, although it might seereasoning from analogy in other forms of pneumonia. If Tartaremetic is ineffectual, Carbo vegeU may still be of eminent use. Bladonna and Hyoscyamus are on a par with Opium^ whereas DigUtalis and Rhus deserve our commendation in the second stage.Regarding Ammonium carbonicum we have no experience of our ownto otter, but we consider this medicine worthy of a trial. Sulphuwill be found of little use in this form of pneumonia, whereasArsenicum album may render good service in the same circumstancesthat we have pointed out for Sulphur in simple pneumonia. [Cannabis saliva and the Bromide of Potassium may be important remediin this form of pneumonia. H.]Epidemic pneumonia either presents a characteristic group ofsymptoms, or else it has the peculiarity of not yielding to remedthat are apparently the most suitable, and of seeming disposed torun a perverse course. In naming the different remedies we have296 Diseases of the Lungs.had in many respects regard to these exceptional characteristics. To hit the right remedy for epidemic pneumonia, the most persevering investigations in the domain of Materia Medica will oftenfound indispensable. According to present experience, Bryoma^Hhus^ Belladonna^ Mrcurius^ Hepar sulphuris^ Phosphorus andTartar emetic are the medicines that we shall have first to selecfrom in epidemic pneumonia. It is more particularly the complications of pneumonia thatrender the treatment difficult and the result doubtful. Theyhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
