This is evidently the result of erroviews concerning the sequelae. Since they apparently originate inthe desquamative period, it was supposed that the sequelse had tobe traced to a disturbance of the process of desquamation. Themost common disturbance was supposed to be a cold. We haveendeavored to show that the commencement of all post-scarlatinaldiseases is traceable to the stage of efflorescence, hence that tare continuations of previous beginnings, not new diseases ; andwe here add that the obstinacy of many a consecutive disorder isowing to wrong management during the disease itself and immediately after. From abundant personal experience we recommendthe following rules. The patients should be kept from the commencement of the disease in an ilniform temperature of from fortyto fifty degrees F., and should only be covered with a linen sheeand blankets. If possible, the sick-chamber should be ventilatedseveral times a day, of course with all proper precautions. Thepatient may be allowed to drink pretty large quantities of freshwater, because the fever deprives the body of a large quantity ofmoisture. The juice of fruit is a refreshing beverage, and may beallowed in moderation ; if used too freely, it is apt to cause naand a bad taste in the mouth. Pure malt-beer we have never knownto do any harm. The patients not desiring any food, gruels, milk, and wheaten bread or bread made of unbolted flour, are sufficientnourishment.
