This subjectaftbrds us another opportunity of satisfying ourselves of the injresulting from an inappropriate and vacillating nomenclaturew^hich positively defeats all the good that could be done by theaccumulated records of clinical experience. Moreover, it is impossible to furnish reliable indications for every drug; the causatiwell as the accompanying secondary phenomena are too varied andyet claim our chief attention, for the reason that the selectionremedy that meets the cause of the eruption, is often exclusivelydetermined by an investigation and knowledge of these phenomena.Tor this reason we have confined ourselves to merely naming themedicines, accompanying some of them by practical hints, andreferring to the Materia Medica for special information, to obtaiwhich the chronic nature of the exanthem affords abundant time.In order to facilitate the search of proper remedies we have associated them with the chief forms of eczema, each according to itslocality.Eczema in the face, which chiefly attacks children, is often madeto dry up in a few days by means of Oleum crotonis^ third trituration. This remedy shows its curative action so much more cerEczema. 495tainly, the more recent the cutaneous affection; moreover, it ismost appropriate in eczema rubrum, and is so much less adaptedto the case, the more nearly the eczema assumes an impetiginoidform. If the disorder is of long standing, and hence more inveterate and more extensive, Lycopodium often acts with surprisingbenefit. Next to this remedy comes Sulphur. For crusta lacteaproper Borax is recommended; Mercurius and Lycopodium^ andlikewise Bepar sulphuris are more reliable. [I have cured the moshorrid cases of crusta lactea with Aconite and Belladonna. H.]From Vida tricolor we have never obtained the least sign of acurative effect. For eczema impetiginoides the remedies we havejust named, are likewise useful, but we have a much better selection among the following : Mercurius^ Hepar sulphuris^ Antimoniumcrudurrij Cicuta virosa^ Baryta. The last-named remedy has a specific action in cases where the eczema is accompanied by swellingof the lymphatic glands, and generally in the case of impoverishescrofulous individuals.[We once cured a baby that had been vaccinated with impurevaccine, of a horrid attack of Crusta serpiginosa^ by means of asingle pellet of Arsenicum 200. On the third day after vaccinatioa black pustule broke out on the arm, which grew very rapidly tothe size of a big potato and was filled with a foul-smelling corrichor. An ugly-looking sore formed wherever the ichor touchedthe skin. In the course of twenty-four hours the face, neck andupper arms looked like one mass of bla9ki8h, dark-brown ulcerartion. This disorganizing process spread almost visibly. The eyescould no longer be seen. The sides of the face and neck, ears andpart of the scalp were covered with this horrid crust. The motherlikewise had become infected. One pellet of Arsenicum 200 wasplaced upon the child's tongue at night.
