It is almost withouaa exception confined to single lobules, and on this account thename of lobular pneumonia has been given to it. There may bemanj' such scattered centres of inflammation, without the percussion-sound being altered in consequence; nor do they occasionbronchial respiration, so that it is scarcely possible to diagnoswith positive certainty. All we know is that capillary bronchitisis very apt to superinduce lobular pneumonia. Like capillarybronchitis, this form of pneumonia is preeminently a disease ofinfancy, and it has to be treated in the same manner as the worstkinds of bronchitis. Interstitial pneumonia is of no particularimportance to us, because it does not require any special treatmeon the other hand it is of importance with respect to prognosis aas regards the diagnosis of other affections to which it resembleIt is always a secondary complication. The process is quite likethe process in cirrhosis of the liver, on which account it has betermed cirrhosis of the lungs. An exudation takes place into theconnective tissue of the lungs; this exudation first changes to cnective tissue and afterwards to cicatrizing, shrivelling firm tiby which the air-cells become compressed, and a condition ariseswhich is designated as induration of the lungs. Since this procesmay likewise set in as a consequence of croupous pneumonia, interstitial pneumonia is likewise a special form of the so-called chrpneumonia. Its most important result is atrophy of the pulmonary256 Diseases of the Lungs.tissue with caving in of the thorax and the development of sacculated bronchiectasia in consequence of which chronic bronchialcatarrh assumes such a peculiar form.Inasmuch as in pneumonia the prognosis depends more evidentlythan in any other disease upon the treatment that happens to bepursued, we have assigned to it a place in the section on the thepeutics of pneumonia.Treatment. We have already stated at the commencement ofthis chapter that the treatment of pneumonia is well calculated tshow the advantages of Homoeopathy over other methods ; henceit behooves us to devote some attention to the modes of treatmentadopted by other Schools. In the first place we have to consider the expectant method whichHomoeopathy has in truth created ; for it is the success of homoepathic treatment which could not well be denied, although homoeopathic doses were supposed to be equivalent to nothing, that emboened the partisans of active treatment to try the treatment of dieases without any violent interference. We confess to our inabilito comprehend a purely expectant treatment of pneumonia, for noconscientious physician will stand by quietly in a case of pneumoand allow the disease to run its course from beginning to end witdoing something for his patient. This may do in cases of simplepneumonia, if the patients are otherwise endowed with soundhealth, and the disease runs a perfectly normal course; but whatto be done in regard to the more or less threatening deviations fhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
