After attening to the main requisite for a cure, namely the regulation of asuitable mode of living, the next business in order is to removeintestinal catarrh as soon as possible, for which purpose the mosrigid diet is often insufficient. All the medicines that have beerecommended for the intestinal catarrh of children, may be calledinto use, but Calcarea carbonica undoubtedly heads the list. It iRhachitis. 419well known that the partisans of the Bational School account forthe use of this agent in rickets upon chemical grounds, namely asa compensation for the excessive loss of the salts of lime in theurine. This excretion of the salts of lime is not the cause, buteffect of the disturbed nutrition of the bones, nor is it borne imind by "rational" physicians that substances like lime, whengiven in their crude shape and in a massive dose, have no effect, even act injuriously. On this account the use of such agents issoon discontinued, again. Nevertheless Calcarea is the surest remfor rhachitis, and we can present it to our opponents as a strikiillustration of the efficacy of small doses. When given in thehigher attenuations, it shows curative effects very promptly, eveif there is no change in the mode of living; we have noticed thison many occasions. We have never witnessed such ,rapid resultsfrom the lower triturations ; hence we advise everybody to firstthe sixth and higher attenuations before resorting to the lowerattenuations and triturations. The diarrhoBa often ceases after tfirst dose, and this change implies a positive victory over the dease. Having almost constantly succeeded with the Carbonate ofLime^ we scarcely ever venture to change to the Phosphate or AcetA copious, watery, sour-smelling diarrhosa is the surest indicatifor Calcarea. .A second remedy which is likewise extremely beneficial in everysuitable case, is Arsenicum. As regards the dose, we apply to itthe same remarks that we have to Calcarea. The Arsenic-diarrhoeais less copious, less watery, of a foul smell as of decomposing mattended with a good deal of flatulence, hectic fever, great restness, sleeplessness, also vomiting, loss of appetite, whereas Calis characterized by a great craving for certain inadmissible kindof food.Sulphur is seldom indicated in rickets. Its chief indication isseldom present, namely a slimy or muco-purulent diarrhoea, withdischarge of pure bile or a copious admixture of bile. It is asseby many that a few doses of Sulphur administered previous toCalcarea, renders the effect of the latter more reliable and promwe have no experience of our own to offer on this point. These three remedies are sufficient to a cure in by far the largenumber of cases. For other remedies we refer the reader to ourchapter on intestinal catarrh.
