Full text of "The Science of Therapeutics: According to the Principles of Homeopath...Page 614 of 653Course, Terminations, Prognosis. The course of the730 Pyaemia.disease is eometimes very rapid, This is most frequently the casein puerperal fever ; the patients are attacked with chills and infever-heat which does not remit; they become delirious, lose theiconsciousness, lapse into a deep sopor and die in fortyhours. In such cases pya^mic localizations are frequently met witin the brain or lungs.A milder course of the disease is marked by distinct remissionslasting from teo to sixteen hours in benignant and only three tofour hours in malignant cases. The shorter the remission the moredangerous the coui'se of the disease. The more violent the fever:the more imminent the danger of internal or external inflammations, the shorter the course of the disease and the more frequena fatal termination. In moderate forms of the disease it may last four, five or sixweeks and terminate in recovery. Convalescence is however in allcases a slow process, slower even than after typhus. In cases running a rapid course the prognosis is generally fatal. In a mild form of the disease a good deal depends upon thecircumstance whether the various manifestations of the pathological process can be improved. If we succeed in moderating theinflammatory symptoms and sustaining the strength of the patient, the prognosis is usually favorable.Sopor, constant diarrhoBa, hemorrhages, decubitus, paralysis ofthe sphincters do not admit of a favorable prognosis. A diphtherichange in existing wounds is likewise a symptom of very bad omen.TreatmenU If we deal with morbid processes in the courseof which pysemia may be apprehended (see etiology), we must takecare to prevent this result. To this end existing abscesses havebe opened in due season, wounds have to be kept clean and theaccess of air into such cavities has to be carefully guarded agaiAt the same time the sick-room has to be frequently ventilated,over-crowding with patients has to be avoided, cleanliness andgood nursing have to be seen to.If, in the course of the above-mentioned diseases repeated shiverings or chills set in, they always denote the beginning of pyiethe symptoms are evidently of a typhoid character, associated witgreat debility and dissolution of the blood. For this reason, with a view of preventing as speedily as possiblthe great loss of strength or correcting the fluids, we resort atto Quinine 1, a dose every two hours, and continue this remedyuntil the chills cease and the violence of the fever abates.Pyaemia. 731http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
