If the induration occupiesbottom of the ulcer, the latter is raised, forming the elevated uif the borders are chiefly indurated, they form a wall round thefunnel-shaped ulcer. The induration sometimes spreads to somedistance round the ulcer, and is generally of a cartilaginous consistence. If the indurated chancre develops itself out of a simplchancre, which is very seldom the case during the first appearancof the latter, and generally not till after the latter has existesome time, the appearance of the ulcer often changes very suddenlThe indurated chancre does not niultiply on the surrounding partshence we seldom see more than one or at most two induratedulcers. It heals much more slowly than simple chancre, and isalmost surely followed by secondary phenomena if a slowly disappearing induration remains after the healing of the ulcer. Thedelicate scar of the indurated chancre is easily torn by frictionwhen a chancrous ulcer readily forms again immediately.Phagedsenic chancre is a chancre modified by the constitution ofthe patient. It only breaks out on cachectic individuals, arisingmore generally from the simple than from the indurated ulcer. Ifsuch an ulcer becomes phagedsenic, it assumes an irregular form,with indentations; it shows a dirty-gray or greenish base, linedwith diphtheritic exudations, is surrounded by a sicklylividareola, and secretes a quantity of thin, sickly and very fematter. The ulcer inclines to spread rapidly and to destroy theorganic tissues, in consequence of which it may involve a consideable loss of substance and even result fatally in a short time. Aphagedsenic chancre most commonly arises in cases where Mercuryhad been very much abused ; it is not diflicult to understand thatne abuse of Mercury should aggravate a phagedsenic chancre verymaterially. A cure takes place by a separation of the infiltratedparts in the same manner as takes place in a case of simple chancA gangrenous chancre may arise both from the simple and inaurated chancre in consequence of the parts round the ulcer becoming^ considerably infiltrated ; the ulcer acquires a sickly colortogether with its surroundings, changes to a scurf which is encom])as8ed by a considerable serous infiltration.
