We refer to the preceding chapter where we have expressed our doubts regarding the appropriateness of Nux ; we haveto repeat these doubts here in much more emphatic language. Thereare, of course, many who profess to have seen good eftects from ieven in influenza ; but it is not so very easy to speak of curatiresults in this disease with positive certainty ; as far as we ouselves are concerned, we never have been able to obtain any striking curative results with this agent.Phosphorus is of all other remedies most positively indicated ininfluenza by distinct and fixed symptomatic manifestations. It issuitable if, in addition to severe constitutional disturbances, tdisease is chiefly localized in the larynx ; it is likewise approin influenza with tendency to develop pneumonia, or if the influeattacks tuberculous individuals in whose case the medicine has tobe given with great caution ; and finally in cases complicated wisevere intestinal catarrh. Among the secondary diseases, such asaphonia or hoarseness, it is particularly Phosphorus that is charteristically indicated.Arsenicum album is suited to an affection of the upper p)ortion othe respiratory tract, the nose and larynx; it is less suited tochitis, except when it attacks individuals afflicted with emphysema. According to our own experience, Opium controls paroxysms of a drycough with congestions to the head and chest, it drives the patieto despair and breaks out particularly in the night. Opium willseldom afford help at the outset of an attack of influenza, but waflbrd speedy and substantial aid if such a cough remains after tdeparture of the fever.Sabadilla is said to have helped in two epidemics, the symptomsof which we transfer from Ruckert's "Klinischen Erfahrungen":"Excessive drowsiness in the day-time; chilliness, especially towards evening ; shudderings with goose-flesh, the chills creepingup from the feet towards the head ; lachrymation, with redness ofthe eyelids ; pressure on the eyes, especially when moving them ohttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
