If the circulation in thevein is restored, all these symptoms may disappear as rapidly asthey came. If pus forms in the vein, the inflammation graduallyascends towards the heart, and the picture of pysemia becomes morand more marked. If the vein remains closed, oedema developsitself beyond the closure and, if a collateral circulation can belished, may last only a short while, or else remain permanent. Insuch a case lassitude, chills at irregular intervals, irregular fof heat sometimes continue for weeks. The terminations of phlebitis depend upon the changes going onin the inflammatory exudation. If no purulent decomposition takesplace, life is not exactly in danger ; if pus forms, it may be caalong with the current of blood, and a most malignant phlebitismay suddenly arise notwithstanding the trifling character of thesymptoms at the outset of the inflammation. It is in this mannerthat lying-in women and persons that had been operated upon, often perish quite suddenly although not a single symptom existedat first that could have given rise to the least apprehensions ofdanger. The prognosis is uncertain. If the chills recur but seldom andwith increasing weakness, the danger is less; whereas frequentchills, prostration and sopor, the supervention of icterus andpetechiffi, are decidly ominous signs.Treatment. Phlebitis is one of those diseases that can scarcelyever be treated in accordance with the rules of a rigorous symptomatic similarity, and where, if we do not mean to commit gravemistakes, we have to keep constantly and clearly in view the wholinternal process not manifested to the senses by a single symptomThus a purely symptomatic similarity can only have a secondaryvalue, and the drugs whose special action upon the veins we havebecome acquainted with from cases of poisoning, necessarily occupthe first rank in the treatment of this disease. Their number isnot great, and a portion of those we shall name, is still very li438 Diseases of the Arteries, Veins, Lymphatics, etc.correctly known, and, what is worse, the clinical applications ofthese drugs are still exceedingly unsatisfactory and insufficientAmong these remedies we distinguish: the ser pent - poisons, thepoison of the honey-bee.
