Erysipelas sin, and he died in two days. *Inasmach as I may not have another opportunity in the courseof this work, of offering the present remark, I desire to avail mself of the present chance. Delirium tremens is the ultimate resuof alcoholic poisoning. Can such a condition be removed in everycase with such small doses as we are in the habit of using in ourpractice? This is questionable. In my opinion there are caseswhere we cannot do our patient justice without treating him withlarge doses of the proper antidote. We remember a case of deliriutremens where the patient complained of vermin crawling over hisbed and hands. Arsenicum 30 cured him entirely. In other similarcases this treatment utterly failed. A stout young man had drankthirty-nine glasses of whisky on a wager in one night. We foundhim cold and the skin dry and husky like parchment. He feltnumb all over. Pulse scarcely perceptible. He was in great agonyof mind and expected to be utterly paralyzed. He was unable tosustain his own weight. I gave him six globules of Nux vomica 30,in half a cup of water, a dessertspoonful every five minutes. Thepatient sank visibly under this treatment. Being satisfied thatNux was his remedy, I now mixed five drops of the strong tincturein six tablespoonfuls of water, of which mixture I gave him adessertspoonful every five minutes. After the second dose he begato perspire. The perspiration seemed to be pure alcohol ; he wasliterally drenched with alcohol. He had to be changed seven timesduring the night ; next morning he felt quite well, except a littweak. I have treated a number of cases of delirium tremens withvariable doses. Upon the whole, small doses have not provedvery eflectual in my hands. Doctor Reed, Jr., of this city, hastreated a number of cases ; proceeding upon the principle of curing the patient as speedily and effectually as possible, he treathis patients irrespective of dose. A few of his cases will show tdelirium-tremens patients sometimes bear unusually large quantitiof medicines. To illustrate this fact I will take this opportunitrelating a few of the cases which he has related to me from hisnote-book.G. L., forty years of age, a butcher and confirmed drunkard, precipitated an impending attack of delirium by falling and breaking three ribs; he suffered but little from pain or prostration.tremor was severe, but the case was remarkable in the character othe delirium, and as showing the immense quantity of Opiumnecessary to overcome the obstinate wakefulness.464 Diseases of the Skin. For two days the delirium was evidenced by the most delightfulvisions, he saw angels hovering over his bed, and held delightfulinterviews with the saints. Not being properly watched, he atnight escaped from the house, and after the lapse of some hoursreturned to relate how he had been upon another Mount of Beatitude, having held sweet converse upon a neighboring sandhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
