Ab soon as the convulsive stage has set in, we enjoiupon the parents the duty of sending the children every day outof doore for a couple of hours, provided the weather is tolerablyWe have never observed any injurious effects from this proceedingeven in winter; the disease does not, on this account, last longethan five weeks, and the children retain a fresh appearance andpreserve their strength and regular appetite. Moreover anotheradvantage should not be overlooked: the children remain in goodspirits, whereas continued confinement in a room usually begets airritable and headstrong temper which has the effect of promotingthe frequency of the paroxysms. Regarding a change of residence,we have already hinted in a previous paragraph our doubts of thepropriety of such a measure. We have never known the childrenof country-people to be favorably aftected by such a change, onlycity-children gain by it sometimes, and in their case it is not tremoval from the influence of the whooping-cough miasm, but thehealthier mode of living that produces the good results. If citychildren are sent back to the city, no good effects are perceivedIndeed, such aids are not necessary. Many lay-people, even physicians, object to washing the children with cold water, or to allothem their usual bath. This, too, is an useless precaution, and meven become injurious for the reason that the skin is made unnecesarily sensitive and its functional activity is forced into an unmode of action. In conclusion we offer a few words regarding the dose of theappropriate remedy. In this respect the partisans of large and smdoses are diametrically opposed to each other, some regardingwhooping-cough as an acute, othera as a chronic disease. It maybe possible to cure whooping-cough with the thirtieth potency ; whave never attempted such a thing; at all events low potencies arnot necessary to effect a cure, nor is it necessary to resort torepetitions of the dose. Our own experience has led us to preferthe middle potencies, giving a dose morning and evening. A frequent change of remedies should be strictly avoided ; rapid succecan never be achieved by such means.[We would call attention to two remedies which Bcehr has omitted to mention, we mean Coffee and Mephitis putorius. The former,if given in dessertspoonful doses of a strong infusion, sweetened^ith sugar and without milk, will have a tendency to shorten andmoderate the paroxysms; the latter has been frequently uliomtBopathic physicianB with good eftect; Doctor Keidh^rd of14210Diseases of the Lungs._ *http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
