Even thurticaria caused by the stings or bites of insects, is often attewith fever.A first attack generally superinduces an increased disposition tothe disease ; this disposition increases in proportion to the freof the attacks, and may continue for years under the designationof chronic nettle-rash. In such circumstances the fever is less wevery new attack, whereas, on the other hand, the most trifling468 Diseases of the Skin.«error in diet, the least cold may excite a new crop of wheals. Inthe case of women the eruption often seems to have some connectiowith the menses. In chronic urticaria the wheals are always scattered, and the surrounding redness is trifling or entirely wantinthe wheals generally look red. This chronic urticaria is'a very onate disorder, but often remains uncured for the reason that theconstitutional anomaly in which it originates, is not regarded.A single attack, if not very violent, does not require any treatment ; medicines may have to be resorted to on account of the constitutional symptoms, not for the exanthem. For decided symptomsof indigestion, Pulsatilla may be given; for a severe gastric catAntimonium crudum. If the fever is intense, Hhus tozicoderuiron ia chief remedy; the severe rheumatic pains, which sometimesaccompany the eruption, require Bryonia^ the acompanying diarrhoea, Dvlcamara. If the aflection becomes obstinate, and newwheals continue to break out, or if a first attack is soon followby a second or third, the speediest possible interference with suable remedial agents is eminently proper. The selection will haveto be chiefly determined by the constitutional symptoms. If nosuch symptoms are present, and if every attack is occasioned bythe most trifling changes of temperature, without fever or anyother derangement, Urtica urens is a very excellent remedy. Thisremedy is likewise appropriate in cases of urticaria complicatedwith renal and urinary difliculties. In the case of children, Calcarbonica is suitable for urticaria without any constitutional sytoms. Of the Balsamum copaivce, which is recommended by manyphysicians, we have no special indications, and should, therefoinot use it until Urtica urens had been tried in vain. If the urticaria breaks out with the menses, Pulsatilla may be given if themenses are scanty, Belladonna if they are profuse. If a chronicuterine catarrh is the cause of the eruption. Apis is an excellenremedy, which may be associated with Lycopodium. It is not necessary to mention more remedies for such a trifling aflection, thdifferent combinations of which it is, after all, inexpedient toout. [We have almost always succeeded in controlling our casesof urticaria with Aconite and Ipecacv/inha. H.]In habitual urticaria the diet plays an important part. In thefirst place, if the skin is excessively irritable, we have to aimhardening it ; this object is more easily reached by vaporby cold bathing and cold ablutions. In the next place the dietitself has to consist of simple articles ; fat, spirits, acrid anulating spices have to be avoided.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
