In evchronic catarrh, simular ulcerations take place without the catarbeino: on that account derived from the ulcers, or the constitutisymptoms from the ulcerative process generally. Why should thisbe done in a case of uterine catarrh ? It cannot be denied that tlast-named ulcers give rise to pain, especially during coition, athat they may even cause slight hemorrhages ; but it is questionable whether such accidents impair the general health as much as24 Diseases of the Female Sexual Organs.is supposed. It is much more natural to regard the general irritability and the nervous phenomena as simple consequences of thecatarrhal disease, and to derive the ulcers from the irritation pduced by the act of coition in individuals with a peculiar predisposition for such derangements. On hearing of so many physicianswho make female diseases a speciality and trot around with theirspecula, promising the afflicted a speedy cure, we cannot forbearsuspecting such vagabonds of impure designs. These ulcers of thecervix fare no better than many other modern discoveries in medicine ; at first everything is explain 3d by means of them, untilpeated disappointments satisfy us, that the discovery was no greathing after all.The consequences of catarrh to the general organism vary both inextent and in intensity. Many women who have been afflicted foryears with profuse leucorrhoea preserve an appearance of perfecthealth ; others, on the contrary, are very much affected even byinconsiderable discharge. One of the most common consequences, and, on the other hand, one of the most common causes, are menstrual irregularities, generally scanty menses. Moreover, an unusnervous irritability, backache, aching pains in the small of thehemicrania, hysteric spasms set in. The patient looks sick, withgrayish, dingy complexion and dark margins around the eyes. Ifthe discharge is very profuse, symptoms of aniemia make their appearance. The faculty of conception is not very much, influencedby uterine catarrh, otherwise women afflicted with it, would notconceive so readily. If the mucous lining is considerably puffedup, and the uterine canal closed by plugs of mucus, it is a matteof course that conception must be very much interfered with. Theworst thing that can happen to the patient is the shock to thenervous system caused by a co-existing titillation of the genitalorgans and a violent excitement of the sexual instinct.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
