This is evidenced by the diiFerent views entetained concerning Bryonia, all of which, however, are foundedupon physiological provings. These indicate most commonly anacute pulmonary affection, with violent stitching pains, wherepleuritis is manifestly indicated by a variety of secondary symptoms, on which account the remedy is very warmly recommendedfor pleuro-pneumonia. There are, however, numerous other Symptoms which refer to the pleura much less than to the lungs; and iis upon these symptoms together with the general constitutionalphenomena that the employment of Bryonia in pneumonia isfounded. We find it inexj)edient to enumerate the symptomsreferring to the homoeopathicity of Bryonia in this disease; moreover it is indispensable that such an important remedy should beknown and remembered in its integrality. Nor do we deem itnecessary to comment upon trivial differences of views in the useof this agent, since most of them harmonize in all the main pointAccordingly Bryonia is particularly indicated after the fever hasabated and has no longer a decidedly inflammatory character, whereas the local process has reached its completion and appearsto rest. In pnemonia running a normal course, such as we have depicted at thecommencement of this chapter, we have never had occasion to useanother remedy after Bryonia. As regards deviations from thenormal course and from the ordinary symptoms, Bryonia is particularly adapted to cases where the tongue is covered with a thickwhite fur, the stomach is completely inactive and the liver isengorged and somewhat painful.
