That this is not the case, can be affirmed byevery homoeopath ; acute emphysema is a very rare occurrence inpneumonia and, if it does occur, it must have been the result ofimproper treatment.Sixthly, venesection, by moderating the pulse and the temperatureprevents nervous exhaustion and acute consumption. How this isto be brought about, is an enigma which physiology does not solveNor does Wunderlich account any more explicitly for the possibility of such a process.A few other points seem to us too unimportant to be mentionedhere in detail; we shall interpolate them in our subsequent remarks.Against the above-enumerated statements we will add to ourprevious remarks the following counter-propositions.It is rather hazardous to declare an individual to whom we arecalled as a physician, positively robust and healthy up to the tiwhen we are called. Every physician must have been deceived inthis respect, and deceptions of this kind, if occurring in pneumocannot lead to pleasant results. There are individuals who are vethin and pale and yet enjoy the most perfect health ; on the othehand, we see weak persons who apparently look stout and florid.By what exact diagnostic signs are individuals suitable for the findication, characterized ?Again we generally notice that robust men seldom have a pulseof over 120 beats, whereas such a pulse is very commonly met within the case of weak persons. Why should not the latter be equallyfavorably affected by venesection? Have they a relatively lessquantity of blood ? The answer is that they do not bear venesection as well as robust persons who can bear a few venesections inpneumonia without any great disadvantage, whereas weakly persons cannot bear them. Where is the boundary, and how do thosePneumonia. 261fare who occupy the line and in whose case we do not know whetherthey belong to one class or the other ?Blood is only to be taken fFom robust individuals. Since bloodletting is reputed one of the most powerful remedial agents, thisphrase must be intended to mean that the pneumonia of robustmen is much more dangerous than that of weakly persons, or thatrobust individuals find it more difficult to conquer the diseasethe amount of strength on hand. This mode of reasoning is certainly not logical. The reaction of a robust man must naturally bmore energetic and prompt than that of a person weakened by exposure, and that the strength of a vigorous person is capable ofbearing a great deal more than that of a debilitated individual. Why should the more intense fever of vigorous persons entail moredanger? We are at a loss to understand the anxiety caused by thepresence of febrile symptoms ; we admit, however, that the qualitof the pulse is an excellent index of present danger, but not thehttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
