China is mostly requiredafter the hemorrhage had lasted already for some time, especiallyafter confinement if the uterine contractions seem to be utterlyhausted, the patient is cold and blue, and a convulsive shock nowand then agitates the frame. The choice of Arsenicum can onlybe determined by the general symptoms, not by the local sexualphenomena. Regarding Plumbum, we transcribe Griesselich's remarks from Ruckert's "Klinischen Erfahrungen": "Among theworst kinds of metrorrhagias we number those that befall femalesat the critical age and who are afflicted with hypertrophy of theuterus. If the patients have been long weighed dow^n by severemental distress, the hemorrhage will prove still more unyielding.Other remedies have often proved futile in such cases. The casesw^here Plumbum afforded help, happened among women of thehigher classes who had attained the age of forty ; they had had fchildren in the first years of their marriage ; the metrorrhagiabecome inveterate, and had assumed a passive character. Generallythe patients had lived well, had partaken of quantities of heatinbeverages, had led a sedentary life and their constitutions had asumed a preeminently venous tendency ; hemorrhoidal tumors hadmade their appearance, constipation, bloating of the bowels aftereating, etc. The metrorrhagia had existed for years, with free intervals of four to six weeks and even longer. During these intervthe patients recovered their strength, but another attack broughtthem down again. The attack was preceded by a sensation ofweight and fulness in the abdomen ; slight labor-like pains fromthe small of the back to the front were experienced, amid whichdark coagula were expelled mingled with fluid blood and serum, without any unpleasant odor ; the discharge was increased by motion ; a profuse discharge was attended with syncope, yawning andstretching, twitchings and by such other signs of anaemia as palption of the heart, a small, intermittent pulse, etc. The hemorrhawas succeeded by a more or less profuse, inodorous and mild leucorrhoea. On exploration the uterus was found to be uniformlydistended. Between the attacks the patients looked sickly, almostchlorotic; the assimilating functions were disturbed, the skin wadry, pale and yellowish, with hepatic spots ; the patients complaof languor, shortness of breath on going up-stairs, had a sad anddesponding mood. The Acetate of Lead, in doses of one quarterof a grain per day, arrested the hemorrhage in several cases andremoved the danger of total destruction which threatened theMetrorrhagia. 77cachectic body, without, however, correcting the constitutional cdition." To these statements we add an important observation :Paul (Archives g^n^rales, Mai, 1800) has had an opportunity ofwatching the effects of Lead upon the female sexual organs in upwards of eighty cases ; his observations lead him to infer that tmetal favors miscarriages and premature births in a most extraordinary degree, and that it very commonly occasions the death ofhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
