Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> Homeopath...Page 607 <strong>of</strong> 653buzzing in the ears, gritting <strong>of</strong> the teeth or trismus. <strong>The</strong> buccalcavity and teeth are generally dry, the thirst is very moderate,appetite is entirely gone, the voice is rough or husky, the respition accelerated, dyspnooic or stertorous. <strong>The</strong> expired air has <strong>of</strong>the smell <strong>of</strong> urea or contains traces <strong>of</strong> ammonia.722 • Uramia.<strong>The</strong> abdomen is distended, at times the distention is bnt triflingat other times meteoristic, the alvine evacuations are frequentlydiarrhoeic, the skin is either dry or covered with a perspirationhas the smell <strong>of</strong> urea, or with a fine dust consisting <strong>of</strong> urea ; isome cases petechise or miliary vesicles make their appearance. Tpulse is always very hurried and small, some times irregular andfiliform. Towards the end <strong>of</strong> the disease, spasmodic tremors, muscular jactitations, subsultus tendinum and an automatic graspingand feeling around, with continued coma, tracheal rattling andfinally paralysis <strong>of</strong> the sphincters set in.Chronic ursemia develops itself gradually during continued derangements or obstructions in the secretion <strong>of</strong> urine, or in consequence <strong>of</strong> a continued decomposition <strong>of</strong> the urine that had remainebehind in the urinary ducts. Chronic ursemia is characterized bysuch phenomena as the following: Sickly, anaemic appearance; continued loss <strong>of</strong> appetite, generally with a thickly-coated tongue ;sion to meat, dryness <strong>of</strong> the mouth ; an increase <strong>of</strong> thirst, generwith a desire for sour or cooling things ; increasing lassitude,siness ; slowness <strong>of</strong> speech and thought, apathy and forgetfulnessconstantly increasing dyspnoea, muscular debility and emaciationcostiveness or serous diarrhoea; dryness and sometimes violentitching <strong>of</strong> the skin which not unfrequently appears studded witheczema, lichen, ecthyma, etc.; asthmatic difficulties, serous catoedema <strong>of</strong> the lungs, finaHy anasarca and general dropsy in consequence <strong>of</strong> the constantly increasing marasmus.Course, Terminations, Prognosis. Acute ursemia sometimesruns a very rapid course, striking the patient down with thsuddenness <strong>of</strong> lightning: if, in the course <strong>of</strong> Bright's disease, stina, in the last days <strong>of</strong> pregnancy, previous to or subsequent toconfinement, etc., the urine is suddenly retained or is reabsorbeconsequence <strong>of</strong> an effusion <strong>of</strong> urine into the cellular tissue; orthe urine remains stagnant, and an ammoniacal decomposition <strong>of</strong>this fluid takes place: vomiting, eclampsia or amaurosis set in,phenomena which are so speedily followed by a deep sopor, continued convulsions or symptoms <strong>of</strong> paralysis <strong>of</strong> the brain, thatdeath may result in a few hours or only at the expiration <strong>of</strong> oneor two days.In the majority <strong>of</strong> cases the disease runs a leas rapid course.
