If the pus becomes thin, assuming the consistence of serum. Sulphur at protracted intervalis appropriate to this condition. On the other hand, if the suppuration proceeds sparingly, and the bottom of the ulcer is fillewith whitish flocks of cellular tissue, which, when touched withthe sound, show the consistence of lard, we advise decidedly theemployment of Iodine. As regards the other consequences of suchan inflammation, they coincide entirely with chronic lymphangioitis..In the above-mentioned form of lymphangioitis of the headneither Bryonia^ nor Belladonna^ Bhus tox. or Mercurius has beenof the least use to us ; Apis showed a marked effect, so that nomore paroxysms took place. As regards external applications, we do not deem 'them necessary, although they need not be rejected, for they very often alleviatethe pain and enable the patient to enjoy longer intervals of restBut we only recommend warm poultices which not only favor absorption on the one hand, but promote suppuration on the other. We are not in favor of any premature lancing of the abscess; theabscess should only be lanced, if, owing to the depth at which thgland is situated, the spontaneous escape of the pus meets withLymphatic Vessels and Glands. 445difficulties, or if the pus can be distinctly seen shining througinteguments. *b. Lymphadenitis Chronica^ Chronic Inflammation of LymphaticGlands. This affection either develops itself out of the acute form, orelse it is a primary disease depending upon constitutional peculities, such as cht^acterize scrofulosis ; or else, in infectious dit takes the place of an acute inflammation. Chronic lymphadenitisometimes occurs as a phenomenon of marasmus with typhoidcharacteristics. Childhood and the period immediately after pubescence furnish most cases of this disease.I£ chronic lymphadenitis develops itself out of the acute form, the swollen gland either remains unopened, or else, if the pus hafound an outlet on the surface, the opening closes again at an eaperiod, and the gland which had been reduced in s'ize by an incomplete suppuration, remains as a firm and hard swelling thatgradually becomes quite painless but may continue to grow bysubsequent turns of inflammation and finally suppurate. In caseswhere chronic lymphadenitis sets in as a primary disease, it firsattacks only one gland, but soon invades a number. The swellingis generally without pain and takes place very gradually; mostcommonly such swellings reach a much larger size than in acutelymphadenitis. Tlie swollen gland may remain unchanged foryears, after which it may gradually disappear spontaneously, theswellings that had originated in childhood, commonly disappearingimmediately after pubescence ; or else further degenerations of thttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
