The paroxysms ofcough are ushered in with a sensation like violent asthma and areaccompanied by severe dyspnoea. The general health is not asmuch impaired as the violent cough might lead one to expect.This so-called first stage of tuberculosis, that is, the period wthe tubercular deposits have not yet commenced to suppurate, isthe time when a cure of the disease can be hoped for with somecertainty. Unfortunately this stage is too often overlooked by thpatient as well as by the physician. To the above-mentioned remdies which have to be exhibited for months, a number of otherremedies have to be added that we require to use for the removalof all the trifling inconveniences inherent in the disease. Thisof the highest importance lest the nutrition of the organism shoube impaired beyond what it necessarily will be by the tubercularprocess. We cannot go into details in this particular. Codoil, a change of climate, and other methods of cure will be treatof by and by.After the supervention of the suppurative stage, the medicinaltreatment has to be considerably modified. We now have to meettwo indications, the necessity of preventing the further depositiof tubercular matter, and, secondly, of circumscribing its puruledissolution. We need hardly state that the prognosis now is muchmore unfavorable than previously. To the remedies that have justbeen named, we now have to add a number of others actingdirectly upon the local process. The use of Ferrum^ at this stagerequires still more caution than before. Other remedies are:lodium^ Phosphorus^ Kali carbon,^ Hepar sulphuris ccUc.^ Silicea^Digitalis^ Plumbum^ Cuprum and Natrum muriaticum. All theseremedies seem to have a marvelous effect in some cases, whereas iapparently similar cases they leave us in the lurch, so that it iceedingly diflicult to establish positive indications from clinicresults. We omit them so much more readily as the slow course of686 • Polyaemia, Hyperaemia.pnoea, oppression of the chest, a dry and tight cough, and dangerof pneumonia or hsemoptoe are present.If the patients have become very much excited by mental labor,committing to memory, by anger or vexation, abuse of spirits, orhave indulged in over-eating or luxurious living; if they complaiof pressure in the frontal region, with nausea or actual saburralvomiting ; if the tongue has a yellowish coating, the taste is soor pasty; if the patients are troubled with frequent eructationsdistention of the abdomen ; if they are irritable, irascible, andbowels are torpid, Nux vottl 8 in solution, every hour, will notremove the hyperaemia but likewise the gastric disturbance.Under similar circumstances and for similar symptoms, Carboveg. 6 or Calc. carb. 6 may likewise prove useful.The last-named remedies, to which we add Sulphur 6, rendergood service for general plethora superinduced by the suppressionof habitual hemorrhoids; if arising from menstrual suppression,we resort to Gonium^ Digitalis or Crocus 8.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
