Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> Homeopath...Page 276 <strong>of</strong> 653with. <strong>The</strong> intensity <strong>of</strong> the symptoms is generally extreme; aphysical exploration yields no result.<strong>The</strong> couree <strong>of</strong> the disease is generally very acute, the prognosisvery unfavorable.<strong>The</strong> etiology is the same as that <strong>of</strong> pleuritis or peritonitis. <strong>The</strong>treatment is likewise the same as that <strong>of</strong> pleuritis or peritonitiis only if out-<strong>of</strong>-the-way symptoms exist that they have to be metby special remedies.<strong>The</strong> most troublesome symptom is the distressing singultus. Forthis symptom we recommend Belladonna 8, especially if complicatedwith difficulty <strong>of</strong> swallowing, risus sardonieus, delirium and voming. If, in a few hours, this remedy does not afiford the desiredhelp, we give the Sulphate <strong>of</strong> Atropine 3, or Hyoscyamus 8.Bi7onia 3 is an excellent remedy, if the inflammation proceeds frthe pleura and is attended with considerable dyspnoBa, violent paduring respiration, difficulties <strong>of</strong> swallowing, cerebral irritatiIf the vomiting is a prominent symptom, as is generally the casewhen peritonitis is present, we resort to Belladonna^ JSux vomicaVeratrum. In obstinate cases we have recourse to Opium.A very disagreeable symptom is the spasmodic laughter, forSingultus, Hiccup. 823which we recommend : Belladonna, Hyoscyamus, Ignatia and Cuprummetallieum 6.2m Siniraltiis, Hleenp.This is owing to a spasmodic contraction <strong>of</strong> the diaphragm,during which the air is drawn in through the contracted glottiswith a shrill and short sound.<strong>The</strong> hiccup either originates in the nervous centres, as during ageneral erethism, neuroses, especially in the case <strong>of</strong> hysteric anhypochondriac patients ; or when accompanying cerebral diseases,such as cerebral ansemia consequent upon long-lasting, exhaustingdiseases or upon considerable losses <strong>of</strong> blood and other animalfluids, as well as upon violent psychical impressions, such as franger, etcOr else, it is simply a reflex-phenomenon, as during diseases <strong>of</strong>the pleura and pericardium.Consensual singultus may occur during diseases <strong>of</strong> the stomach,liver, pharynx, intestinal canal, etc.In the case <strong>of</strong> children it <strong>of</strong>ten occurs in consequence <strong>of</strong> a cold,or acid stomach.Singultus occurring during cerebral ansemia consequent uponchronic diseases, such as carcinoma, Bright's disease, tuberculosetc., or upon exhausting diseases, such as typhus, cholera, or uphttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
