This depends chiefly upon the consumptionof the blood ; in youth and robust manhood this consumption goeson very rapidly and often outweighs the process of restoration, whereas in old age much less blood is consumed, the regenerativeprocess being carried on at an equal ratio.Intercurrent diseases of any kind during the course of anaemiarender the prognosis more uncertain, since the number of blooddisks which is anyhow scanty, decreases with more or less rapidity, more particularly in acute febrile and inflammatory diseasesand most seriously during typhus and intermittent fevers. Theprognosis is doubtful for the additional reason that a rapid desttion of the red blood-disks is attended with a rapid sinking of tvital energy, and a high grade of adynamia, or destructive suppurations or gangrenous disorganizations may be the consequence.Treatment. In our opinion anaemia is a most important pathological condition developed in the depths of the various morbidprocesses ; it frequently becomes an object of observation and heclaims our most serious attention. The homoeopathic treatment of anaemia comprehends three divisions of equal importance : the removal of the causes, diet, anduse of remedial agents.Deficiency or rather Paleness of the Blood. 695If the causes are known and can be removed, the first steptowards a cure is frequently made. Hence all losses of blood andother fluids, the waste of strength, have to be arrested as speedas possible; anomalies depending upon birth, constitution, age, sdevelopment, etc., have to be regulated ; excessive bodily or menexertions, depressing eniotions, sexual excesses have to be rigidavoided; the unfavorable influences of climate and atmosphere havto give way to more favorable surroundings ; the supply has to beof the right quality and quantity ; errors of nutrition and assimtion have to be corrected; the circumstances of education, mode oliving, occupation, habit, etc., have to be considered ; diseasessingle organs and systems, and constitutional anomalies by whichansemic conditions are so often engendered, have to be carefullyobserved, aud the bad eflects of sudden changes of temperature, weather, a sudden rise or fall of the barometer or thermometer, ounfavorable influences of the season, have to be counteracted byappropriate measures. In cases where the causes of aneemia are unknown, where theyare not sufficiently accounted for and cannot be investigated, asmost commonly the case in regard to the various forms of constitutional anaemia, we adhere to our previous statement that the diminution of the red corpuscles, and the consequent aneemia, is eithoccasioned by a too rapid consumption, or by a deficient reproduction of these bodies, or by both these causes at once.
