This shows that the heartsymptoms, which Arsenic occasions so constantly and exquisitely, have to be accounted for in a different manner than by means ofan inflammatory process. Clinical experience leads us to trace thsymptoms to dissonances of the cardiac nerves, or else to regardthem as secondary symptoms. Myocarditis presents many pointsof resemblance to the symptoms of Arsenic, and it is more especiain this disease that we should try Arsenic, were it only for thereason that Arsenic exerts an intensely-paralyzing effect upon tlmuscular tissue of the heart. This effect of Arsenic determinesits relation to the other two forms of cardiac inflammation. IleuCarditis. 863we consider Arsenic indicated in the cases where Veratrum seemsindicated, if the pulse very speedily loses its fulness and strenand an excessive state of debility sets in at an early period. Thmost generally the case with cachectic individuals, and Arsenic ione of the most essential remedies in most cachexias. Amongsecondary heart-diseases, chronic pericarditis is the only one whArsenic would be appropriate, if a copious exudation is present. In valvular disease, we have never obtained any decided improvement by Arsenic ; it only acts as an uncertaih palliative.Spigelia is an important remedy in heart-affections, but its provings have to be greatly improved. In accordance with what ispublished of this drug, Hartmann gives the following symptomaticindications: Undulating motion of the heart; indistinct beats ofthe heart running into one another; when laying the hand uponthe heart, tumultuous beating of the heart in a recumbent as wellas in a sitting posture, not synchronous with the radial pulse;spasms of the chest, suffocative complaints ; tremulous sensationthe chest and temples ; increased by motion ; tearing sensation ithe chest, when raising the arms over the head, and when touchingthe pit of the stomach; purring murmur during the beats of theheart; stitches in the region of the heart; pulsations of the carwith a tremulous motion; great dyspnoea at every change of position ; bright redness of the lips and cheeks, changing to palloring every motion ; the impulse of the heart raises the four lastribs, the sternum and xiphoid cartilage, and displaces the dorsalvertebrse; audible beating of the heart, causing a pain that is fthrough to the back; cutting pains from the heart to the shoulderas far as the head and arms ; excessive dyspnoea, with a pressingcutting pain in the abdomen, at the insertion of the ribs; arthripains and stiffness of the joints ; dull stitches where the beatsheart are felt, and recurring with the measured regularity of thepulse; the beats of the heart can be felt through the clothes, wianxious oppression of the chest ; scraping in the throat, affectithe tracheal and bronchial mucous membrane; the beats of theheart are not synchronous with the pulse; purring murmur. Asrespects this enumeration, it is to be observed that these symptofor the most part are not the result of physiological experimentation, but clinical symptoms observed upon the sick, and hence 'arof less value to us. At any rate these symptoms do not contain thsymptoms of sero-plastic, nor of serous pericarditis. On the othehand we distinctly recognize in this complex of symptoms both thehttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
