In verrare cases the constitutional equilibrium remains undisturbed eveduring the eruptive stage ; however, in every considerable epidema child with measles is occasionally seen running about the streeIf the exanthem runs a benign course, its decrease commencesat the end <strong>of</strong> the third day, seldom before tHis time, and continuwith great rapidity until the eruption has entirely disappeared.<strong>The</strong> spots grow smaller, assume a distinctly yellowish tint whichis especially marked on pressure with the finger, and within tweltwenty-four hours the spots have completed their disappearance wiout leaving a vestige <strong>of</strong> their existence. Very frequently, howevethe yellowish tint remains for several days. <strong>The</strong> fever declines vspeedily, the catarrh <strong>of</strong> the conjunctiva likewise abates, whereasthe bronchial catarrh most generally continues for a few dayslonger, and resolution sometimes does not take place until a considerable quantity <strong>of</strong> mucus has formed. Not unfrequently thepatient is at this period attacked with diarrhoea for one or twoPr<strong>of</strong>use perspiration is not the rule, but is not by any means ananomalous occurrence.Desquamation commonly commences on the seventh day, butmay delay until the fourteenth. <strong>The</strong> epidermis comes <strong>of</strong>f in branshaped scales, very seldom in larger patches ; in the face and onextremities the desquamation is most distinct. Duripg this periodthe general health is generally good ; except that the bronchialcatarrh and still less frequently the diarrhoea may continue to sextent. In very few case^ the irritation <strong>of</strong> the conjunctiva likewise continues some time longer.According to the nature <strong>of</strong> the epidemic or other superveningdisturbances this normal course <strong>of</strong> the measles undergoes variousmodifications which we now proceed to point out, classifying themas benign, that is such as do not complicate the prognosis, and amalignant.
