Hence we take it for granted that every physician is fullyposted in these branches of medical knowledge, and shall confineourselves to interpolating particulars whenever necessary, whiletreating of the various aftections; by pursuing this course we shbest fulfil the object of this work.1. Hypenemla of tbe Iiimgs.Congestion^ Flethora of the Lungs.Considering the extraordinary quantity of blood which, in comparison with other organs, goes to the lungs; considering the dilability of the pulmonary parenchyma and of its enveloping membrane, we at once not only comprehend the possibility of pulmonarengorgements, but that this possibility is even very great ; if wdevote some space to a consideration of this subject, it is becauHyperaemia of the Lungs. 151all pulmonary hypercemias, primary as well as secondary, are of tgreatest practical importance.Pulmonary hyperemia is of two kinds ; it is an active hyperaemiaor active congestion when caused by an afflux of blood to the lunand a passive congestion when resulting from an obstructed effluxof the blood from the lungs. Active hypenemia presupposes inmost cases an increased activity of the heart, hence constitutesessential symptom of all cardiac anomalies attended with increasefunctional activity of the heart, but may likewise be occasioneda temporary excitation of the heart's action by violent bodily efsuch as running, dancing, singing, lifting, ascending a hill ; orpowerful mental emotions, or by substances which cause a suddenacceleration of the circulation, more particularly spirits, wine, coflFee ; it may likewise occur as a symptom of a general plethorcondition of the system occasioned by the suppression of habitualhemorrhages. Pulmonary hypersemia is less frequently caused byirritants striking the lungs directly ; very cold or very hot airtating gases, rarefied air, etc. Hence lively, sanguine, irritabldividuals between the ages of twenty to thirty-five and forty yeaduring the prevalence of great heat or severe cold, or when residon high mountains, are much more liable to pulmonary hyperjemiathan persons of different temperaments and living under differentinfluences. Various morbid conditions of the lungs, especially tuculosis, engender a strikingly great disposition to pulmonary congestions.Passive congestion is never a primary affection, but always aconsequence of other morbid processes obstructing the return of tblood from the lungs. This result is more especially brought abouby various anomalous conditions of the heart. In the proper placepassive congestion will be discussed more fully when we come tospeak of the different pathological states of the lungs; in thishttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
