ThisAngina Pectoris. 405course has, of course, to be pursued if the palpitation is causedsome other pre-existing aftection. If the paroxysms occur at indeinite periods and continue for a long time, the patient must havehis medicine always handy, for it is of the utmost importance, with a view to shortening the existing paroxysm, that the remedyshould be taken as soon as possible after the commencement of theattack. Or else a suitable remedy may be prescribed for thespecial paroxysm, and afterwards another medicine for the diseasegenerally. The diet and mode of living that have to be recommended, varyaccording to the origin of the trouble, but can easily be inferrefrom the nature of the case. We should, however, strenuouslyguard against the mistaken notion that invigorating nourishment, vigorous bodily exercise, even gymnastics or the use of wine mustbe avoided by those who are liable to palpitation of the heart. This disorder is but too frequently symptomatic of great weaknesshence requires invigorating nourishment and a strengthening modeof living. If the palpitation arises from sexual disturbances, cold sitzof a moderately low temperature and not persisted in too long attime, will prove excellent auxiliaries. General cold baths very sdom agree with a patient thus afflicted, nor do cold shower7. Angina PectorUi, Stenocardia. This upon the whole very rare affection has not yet been accounted for in such a manner that any explanation that has beengiven of it, might not be objected to for a variety of reasons; ntheless all attending circumstances justify the classing of thisease among the neuroses. Whether the cardiac plexus is the seatof this disease, or not, cannot be determined with any degree ofcertainty. The etiology is obscure and vague; we only know from statisticaldata that males are infinitely more subject to this disease thanfemales, and that fat individuals, or such as incline to make fatare principally attacked. Persons beyond the age of forty aremostly liable to the disease, and they generally belong to the hiclasses. Its frequent combination with cardiac anomalies, especiawith atheroma or ossification of the coronary arteries, does notjustify the opinion that the disease originates in such disorganitions, for it is known to occur without any material alterationsthe heart. All exciting causes are very often entirely absent ; b406 Diseases of the Heart.the attacks are usually provoked by a bodily effort giving rise tan augmentation of cardiac activity. It is only exceptionally that a paroxysm does not set in suddenlyhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
