At the commencement of this disorder we may recommend Coniumj Baryta^ Graphites and Sulphur*Lupus exfolians is no less obstinate than the previous variety,and it is very difficult to pick out suitable remedies for this din our Materia Medica. We may try Arsenicum^ next to whichSulphur J Phosphorus^ Kali bichrom.^ and perhaps Thuya.Lupus non-exedens does not require any other remedies thanlupus exedens.Other remedies for lupus are : lodium^ Carbo animalis and vegetabiliSy Silicea^ Alumina.The usefulness of external applications is sometimes evident,but not unfrequently questionable ; cauterization sometimes doesgreat amount of injury. In a case of lupus hypertrophicus, cauterization is especially a proceeding of doubtful propriety; likecarcinoma, it usually grows so much more rapidly afterwards. Ifcauterization is insisted upon, it should be done with the pointeextremity of a stick of the Nitrate of silver ; it is important tremember that only the little tubercles must be cauterized, not twhole of the diseased surface. All liquid caustics irritate the ifiltrated skin still more, and make the disease worse than beforeCod-liver oil in large doses has sometimes an excellent effect ;might perhaps be sufficient to improve the constitution by good asubstantial nourishment ; for cod-liver oil is only useful to patwhose assimilative system has been very much impaired.15.
