Insevere cases the tongue and breath were cold.In the sthenic form the symptoms of an inflammatory condition of the system, severe headache, a high, full and hard pulse, flushed face and throbbing in the temples, were present. The hemorrhagic type was characterized by eftusions of bloodfrom various organs and tissues, "the hemorrhage never beingsingle, nor from any one source or organ only."In the purpuric form the distinctive signs are purpuric patchesof various tints and colora, caused by subcutaneous efiusions ofcoloring matter of the blood. The typhous form is most generally a sequela of the other types;in some cases the disease presents the character of typhus, withstupor, nervous prostration and other typhoid symptoms, from theoutset of the attack. In reference to the course and characteristics of yellow fever,Dr. Holcombe imparts the following interesting information in hi*interesting paper :"Yellow fever, like scarlatina, presents a wide range of manifestation, from an ephemeral mildness to the most malignantseverity. The impending attack is sometimes foreshadowedfor a few hours by languor, restlessness, and malaise, most commonly a chill comes on, without premonition. Sometimes heat,Febris Icterodes. 606shiveriiigs, headache and nausea, are all confusedly mingled in tonset. When the febrile reaction is complete, the pain in the heaback and limbs is sometimes exceedingly severe ; the skin is hotand dry; the pulse full and hard, from 100 to 130; urine scantyand high colored ; eyes injected, watery, brilliant ; tongue covewith a pasty, white coat, with red edges and ap>ex ; there is somtimes a good deal of mucous and bilious vomiting." This paroxysm, scarcely distinguishable from the incipient stage of bilious remitent, lasts from twelve tb .thirty-six hours, terminating in a geor partial perspiration with great diminution, but seldom with thdisappearance of the symptoms. This remission is the rule, but thexceptions are numerous, and I have repeatedly seen the fever continue uninterruptedly four or five days. In a few hours the patiedeclares himself worse, and another train of symptoms arises. Thepain in the head, back and limbs is not so poignant, frequently ientirely absent. The pulse, tongue and skin may remain natural, whilst in fact the patient is verging into a most critical state.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
