If it has apurulent appearance, we may almost feel sure that the expectoratidoes not alone proceed from the larynx and trachea.<strong>The</strong> difficulties <strong>of</strong> breathing, an oppressed, wheezing respirationand even an asthmatic dyspnoea are occasioned by a swelling andconstriction <strong>of</strong> the glottis, hence do not show the degree <strong>of</strong> intebut the seat <strong>of</strong> the disease. <strong>The</strong>se difficulties are <strong>of</strong> importancea physician for the additional reason that they excite the most fful apprehensions in the minds <strong>of</strong> most patients.This disease generally runs a protracted and even obstinatecouree. It is mostly determined by the existing anatomical lesionA simple affection <strong>of</strong> the mucous membrane is easily cured ; whatrenders the final result doubtful is, when the patients expose thselves to influences that rekindle the disorder as soon as it besto mend. A simple ulcer is likewise within the reach <strong>of</strong> remedialinfluences, whereas the more deeply-penetrating ulcer and the fun132 Diseases <strong>of</strong> the Larynx and Trachea.goid exeresccnces <strong>of</strong> the mucous membrane resist all treatment somuch more obstinately as their diagnosis is more uncertain. It isonly in very rare cases that laryngotracheal catarrh is dangerousto life, not immediately, but in consequence <strong>of</strong> some pulmonaryaffection that may have been superinduced by the diflSiculties whthe air encounters in passing through the larynx. Laryngealphthisis without tubercles is a very rare occurrence, in which cait most generally depends upon other dyscrasic conditions. <strong>The</strong>tubercular laryngeal catarrh will be described when we come tospeak <strong>of</strong> tuberculosis ; here we will only state that almost all dgerous and obstinate laryngeal catarrhs, especially if attended wemaciation or fever, are caused by tubercular infiltration.Treatment* We deal with an affection that may occur in themost diversified forms, complications and degrees <strong>of</strong> intensity, awhich on this account alone renders the selection <strong>of</strong> a large numb<strong>of</strong> remedies expedient. We could not possibly mention every drugthat may be required for the treatment <strong>of</strong> this disease, and haveconfined ourselves to an enumeration <strong>of</strong> the more important remedies, referring the reader to a good Repertory as an indispensabauxiliary, if a remedy is to be chosen for a single symptom <strong>of</strong> chacteristic value.Tartarus stibiatus and Antimonium crudum. <strong>The</strong> former is especiallindicated when the acute form passes into the chronic, more particularly in the case <strong>of</strong> children and old people. <strong>The</strong>re is a freqdesire to cough, attended with an audible rattling <strong>of</strong> mucus in thair-passages, a thick and white phlegm being brought up after asevere paroxysm <strong>of</strong> racking cough. Or the cough may set in indetached violent paroxysms accompanied with dyspncea and endingin gagging and forcing up mucus. Both kinds are principally metwith among children and old people.
