As a rule, the skin is seldom, and only inconsiderably, infiltrated. This form chiefly attackschildren.Eczema of the hairy scalp is likewise generally of the impetiginoid form ; it makes the hair look and feel like felt, is veryto spread a foul odor and to give rise to the formation of verminand is strikingly disposed to migrate beyond the hair, especiallythe nape of the neck. This form of eczema is more particularlymet with among adults.Eczema of the male organs breaks out on the penis in an acuteform as eczema simplex; on the scrotum, on the contrary j itdevelops itself in a very chronic form as eczema rubrum. Thelast-mentioned form causes a horrid itching, and is generally maitained by a dilatation of the cutaneous veins on the scrotum. Itis almost always confined to the scrotum, and is one of the mostobstinate cutaneous affections. It is very seldom attended with tformation of pustules, but is very apt to lead to hypertrophy ofscrotal integuments.Eczema of the legs (salt-rheum) really depends almost exclusivelyupon varicose veins, more especially upon dilatation of the smallcutaneous veins, whereas the larger vessels may continue in a perfectly normal condition. This eczema is extremely obstinate, itchmost horridly, generally exacerbates in the spring and fall and ispecies of eczema rubrum with occasional formation of pustulesand an infiltration of the skin that makes it almost look likeelephantiasis.Eczema has a peculiar tendency to attack correspondinglysituated portions of the skin, even though the morbific irritatiooriginally only acted upon one side of the body.Eczema seldom runs an acute course ; the extremely acute fonnof "eczema universale" is very rare; on the other hand, it notunfrequently commences as an acute exanthem, with slight fever, but very soon assumes a chronic character. All the difterent formof eczema itch more or less ; scratching, which it is impossibleavoid, is a main cause of the onward spread and the protractedcourse of the disease. Every kind of eczema may heal and doesheal spontaneously, provided the chief requisite towards a cure,Eczema. 498namely rest in a horizontal posture, is attended to. Eczema of thleg and scrotum is the least promising of any.Treatmentm There is no cutaneous aflTection the cause of whichis more easily discovered than that of eczema ; nor is there anycutaneous affection where the removal of the cause is more essentto the success of our treatment.
