CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES WITHOUTDEFINITE INFECTION.i« Chlorosis.Green-sickness.Chlorosis as an idiopathic disease occurs exclusively amongfemales, and is connected with the sexual functions in a mannerthat we are as yet unable to account for by a precise and logicalprocess of reasoning. Chlorosis occurs chiefly between the ages othirteen and twenty-four years, seldom at a later period ; if itit can be traced to secondary disturbances, such as : confinementof young women coming rapidly one after another, more especiallyif the women nurse their own children. Hence the real cause ofchlorosis has to be traced to the sexual sphere ; but it is easilceived that unconquerable obstacles stand in the way of a thorouginvestigation. The disease sometimes breaks out previous to thefirst appearance of the menses, more frequently after several menstrual periods ; as an entirely primary disease it only breaks ouamong unmarried women. It appears to be hereditary ; females ofa pale complexion are more liable to be attacked with it ; no constitution is exempt from the disease, although delicate individuawith irritable nerves are more susceptible to it.
