On this account the physician should be unremittingin his attention ; he should frequently examine the surface of thbody, and especially the abdomen ; a physical exploration of thethorax is likewise indispensable. If the sensorium is depressed,is important that, during such explorations, the frequency of therespirations or any impediments to the act of breathing, or adistortion of the features when pressure is made uj-on the abdomeor muscles, should be carefully noted. Inflammations in the subcutaneous cellular tissue, or in the muscles, in internal viscerathe joints, never fail to occur, and they have to be removed asspeedily as possible. For the treatment to be pursued in suchcases we refer the reader to the chapters on meningitis, parotitiarthrocace, pneumonia, puerperal fever, typhus.Of excellent eftect in the course of pysemia are ablutions of thebody with dilute vinegar, two or three times a day. If pustules sthemselves on different parts of the body, they can be destroyedand their increase in number prevented by rubbing the parts withcoarse, wet cloths. Larger pustules have to be opened with alancet. For the aphthsB or diphtheritic exudations in the mouth andfauces we have in vain used Iodine^ Merc.^ Borax and Hepar sulph. The much vaunted Kali cfdoricum and Arg. niir. likewise provedfruitless. Generally these processes only cease with the cessatioof pyaemia. In the case of aphthae the frequent rinsing or washinof the mouth with cold water; and in the case of diphtheriticexudations frictions of the buccal and pharyngeal mucous membrane with dry linen rags, or which have been dipped in coldwater, render excellent service.Abscesses have to be sought for with great care and, even ifdeep-seated, have to be emptied as speedily as possible. The dietetic and general precautionary measures to be adoptedduring convalescence are the same as those that have been recommended for abdominal typhus. After the termination of the disease a high degree of anaemia782 Septicaemia.and muscular debility generally remains. For the former we giveFerr. metalL^ carbon.^ or lacticum 1 ; for the latter China 1 orQuinine 1, two or three doses a day, together with a strengthenindiet.Country-air is well calculated to promote convalescence.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
