All other externalapplications of corrosive substances, except Nitric acid^ are uttcondemned by Hebra.18. Aene RoAacea, Gntta Hosaeea.Copper-nosey Bottle-nose.Acne rosacea is an exanthem consisting of tubercles with somedisposition to suppurate, suppurating tubercles; and, moreover, ocontinual venous hyper»mia. It almost always commences at the tip of the nose, whence itspreads over the dorsum of the nose and over both cheeks, finallyover the forehead and the rest of the face. First we notice an erthematous spot of small extent, painless, and distinctly traverseby dilated cutaneous veins. Upon this erythematous base singletubercles start up, which sometimes suppurate at an early period, but likewise spread in size after the pus is discharged. New tubecles keep constantly forming, new erythematous spots keep constantly breaking out, the skin becomes more and more hypertrophiethe veins become more and more varicose, the isolated little blotchange to large tubercles, cracks and deep rhagades, and even ulcmake their appearance, and the face looks very much disfigured inconsequence of this extreme development of the nasal exanthem. At first the affection has remissions, but the dark redness neverdisappears entirely ; at a later period the disorder keeps growinthe time.Abuse of wine and spirits is the cause of the disease in by farthe larger number of cases ; but it likewise breaks out on indiviuals of very moderate habits and where the disease cannot be tracLupus. 488to any apparent cause. Among women the disease is of rare occurrence and most generally associated with menstrual anomalies. Thedisease is not often seen previous to the twenty-fifth year ; itafrequent occurrence is after the fortieth. Overheating the systemand immoderate drinking are very apt to cause a renewed outbreakof the disease. It is exceedingly obstinate and, in its higher gris considered incurable.Hartmann recommends the following remedies for this disease :Carbo animaliSj Kali carbonicum^ Arsenicum^ Veratrum alburn^ Cannabis^ Acidum nitricxvm and phosphoricumj Tlmya^ Phosphorus^ Eurphrasiaj Silicea^ Ledum^ Huta^ Aurum^ Kreosotum^ Sepia^ Petrdeum^Plumbum^ Sulphur^ Acidum sidphuricunij Capsicum^ Clematis^ Psoricum. We cannot be blamed for not attaching any sort of importance to so many remedies for a morbid condition that is socharacteristically marked by definite and unvarying symptoms, and so little involves the general health. Among the abovetioned remedies, Carbo animaliSj Arsenicum^ Acidum niticicumj Aurrumj Sepia and Sulphur are the only ones that promise partialsuccess in the treatment of this disease; Carbo animalis and Arseicum in the case of drunkards, and Sepia in the case of females. The treatment is always protracted and the results uncertain orimperfect, for the redness most generally remains.
