Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> Homeopath...Page 523 <strong>of</strong> 653course, not expect to accomplish anything ; large doses <strong>of</strong> the cocentrated tincture are required to produce a curative effect.<strong>The</strong> following case <strong>of</strong> poisoning is reported by Doctor JacobReed, Jr., <strong>of</strong> this place: A man, forty-five years <strong>of</strong> age, undertreatment <strong>of</strong> rheumatism, swallowed a teaspoonful <strong>of</strong> liniment composed <strong>of</strong> equal parts <strong>of</strong> the tincture <strong>of</strong> Aconite-root and water.This was followed by pain in the epigastrium, numbness <strong>of</strong> thehands and feet, and a sense <strong>of</strong> formication over the whole body.One hour after, the dose was repeated. At the time <strong>of</strong> my visit,an hour and a half after the first dose, the man had swallowed ova drachm <strong>of</strong> the strongest tincture <strong>of</strong> the root. I found him in acomplete state <strong>of</strong> collapse ; after the second dose he had vomitedrepeatedly, first bilious matter changing into copious watery discharges ; he had also had several very large rice-water dischargefrom the bowels ; he complained <strong>of</strong> terrible pain and anxiety abouthe heart, was pulseless, skin cold and clammy, face indicative ogreat suffering and fear, breath cold to the hand ; occasional paoxysms <strong>of</strong> general opisthotonic spasms would leave him in a prostrated condition in which it would seem that bis constantly exprefear that he should die, was about to be realized.Before I questioned the family, from my first examination <strong>of</strong> thecase, I judged it to be cholera ; indeed, if there had been casescholera in town, I would have thought it unnecessary to investigaCholera Asiatica. 623the case further. I discovered the mistake that had been made,and under the free use <strong>of</strong> stimulants, C<strong>of</strong>fee and Opium, he recovered, but not until after three or four hours continuance <strong>of</strong> theabove severe symptoms."<strong>The</strong> following case <strong>of</strong> poisoning from the tincture <strong>of</strong> Aconiteis reported in the October number, 1868, <strong>of</strong> the Medical and Surgical Reporter, published in Philadelphia. By mistake a child wasgiven a teaspoouful <strong>of</strong> the strong tincture <strong>of</strong> Aconite-root. <strong>The</strong>patient was a boy, six years <strong>of</strong> age. Doctor Hays <strong>of</strong> Covington,Ky., where the poisoning occurred, reports as follows : I found tpatient so much prostrated that, had there been an epidemic <strong>of</strong>cholera, and had I no examination to aid me, or any previous history, but had to depend upon the appearance <strong>of</strong> the patient, Iwould undoubtedly have pronounced it a collapsed state <strong>of</strong> cholera<strong>The</strong> skin was cold, clammy and livid, with a pr<strong>of</strong>use perspiration,there was no pulse to be felt at the wrist, the action <strong>of</strong> the heawas quite feeble and irregular, the capillaries were scarcely ablbe refilled when their contents were poured out. <strong>The</strong> head wascold, the eyes were natural in appearance,- except the dilatationthe pupils which was extreme and not at all sensitive to the effe<strong>of</strong> light. <strong>The</strong> facial expression was haggard, the nose pinched, thbreathing extremely labored, the lungs were filled with mucus, thrattle <strong>of</strong> which could be distinctly heard in any part <strong>of</strong> the room<strong>The</strong> patient's bowels moved several times involuntarily.
