Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> Homeopath...Page 598 <strong>of</strong> 653iS« Marasmiis, Tabes.[This anomaly <strong>of</strong> the functions <strong>of</strong> nutrition consists in a perceptible decrease <strong>of</strong> the normal roundness and fulness <strong>of</strong> the body.Primarily marasmus arises in consequence <strong>of</strong> congenital debility,a deficient supply <strong>of</strong> nourishment, excessive bodily or mental labcontinued mental depression, sexual excesses, self-abuse, continusitting, too frequent confinements. Very <strong>of</strong>ten the cause is unknown.Secondarily this disease may be superinduced by excessive secretion, seminal losses, excessive perspiration, ptyalism, excessivenursing, long-lasting diarrhoea, blennorrhoea, diabetes melitus,tinued losses <strong>of</strong> blood, chronic suppurations or discharges <strong>of</strong> ichexhausting diseases, pysemia, cancer, syphilis, tuberculosis, lonlasting intermittents, etc.Marasmus likewise arises in consequence <strong>of</strong> chronic blooding, by Arsen.y Lead, Mercury^ etc., or in consequence <strong>of</strong> exhauststrength, most frequently in childhood and old age ; it may likewise occur in consequence <strong>of</strong> continued nervous irritability, sleelessness, chronic febrile conditions, etc.Marasmus is chiefly characterized by a gradual or rapid emaciation, disappearance <strong>of</strong> the adipose tissue, a wrinkled skin, flabbness <strong>of</strong> the muscles. <strong>The</strong> skin is mostly dry, extenuated, wrinkledrough and scaly, without turgor or elasticity ; at times it is yeish, at other times strikingly pale, or cachectic; at times it iscovered with local or colliquative perspiration; the hair on the712 Marasmus, Tabes.head falls out more and more, the nails become curved and brittlethe extremities are mostly cool, the patients frequently complain<strong>of</strong> a feeling <strong>of</strong> coldness and cannot get warm.At times the appetite is great, increasing even to canine hunger,but the hunger is soon appeased and digestion takes place veryslowly. At other times the patients experience an irresistible avsion to meat or certain kinds <strong>of</strong> food. In most cases the thirst iincreased.<strong>The</strong> breath is <strong>of</strong>ten fetid, the gums are atrophied, the teeth aredenuded, and gradually become loose and fall out.<strong>The</strong> voice is feeble and without resonnance, the respiration isfrequently normal, but <strong>of</strong>ten oppressed, and after the least bodilexertion dyspnoea and palpitation <strong>of</strong> the heart set in. <strong>The</strong> breastbecome pendulous and flabby, the abdomen is at times sunken, atother times distended ; the bowels are at times loose, at other tconstipated, and again dysenteric ; the urine is mostly secretedsmall quantities and saturated, the genital organs become atrophiand the sexual instinct is either diminished or becomes entirelyextinct. <strong>The</strong> pulse is small and feeble, sleep fatiguing rather threfreshing, sometimes it is very much disturbed ; the patients areither hypochondriac or irascible; sometimes they show muchhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
