Hence we would, by all means, advise to treat such a case,were it only to make the patient believe that he is taking something, and thus to keep him from using strong and generally deleterious drugs, or to continually remind him, by the use of a littharmless medicine, of the necessity of avoiding every kind of excess and even the least violation of the rules laid down for himby his medical adviser. The medicines which we deem the bestadapted to such puri)0ses, are almost all of them metals or inorgsubstances, no vegetable drugs. At any rate, we have never obtained any permanently good results from a vegetable drug. Werecommend Arsenicum^ Aururn^ Argentum^ Cuprum^ Plumbum^ PlaUna and Ferrum. It would be useless to undertake to assign toeach of these remedies definite limits in the treatment of hypertrophy ; we only recommend in general terms Arsenicum^ Plumbumand Ferrum for hypertrophy of the right ventricle, and the otherremedies, including likewise Arsenicum, for hypertrophy of the leventricle. In a given case, the selection of the remedial agent whave to be governed by the nature of the existing general symptoms. Sulphur^ Nairum muriatlcum and Petroleum may be addedto our list of metals. If we desire to obtain good eflfects fromdrugs, we must guard against too strong and too frequently repeated doses, and against changing the remedy too often.Considering the mischief which is so often done by the abuse oflarge doses of Digitalis, we repeat with decided emphasis that theffect of this drug in hypertrophy of the heart is never permanencurative, but only palliative, and that, if it is given for sleepit will act so much more like Opium, the more it is homceopathicaindicated by slowness of the beats of the heart.8.
