With the exception of Carbo vegetabilis^ Iodinethe only remedy that has shown any curative results in our handsfor this affection ; all other remedies have proved fruitless, anhas only been in the course of time that the natural voice returnPhthisis after measles can only be regarded as tubercular, if noof pneumonia had been noticed either during the acute stage of thexanthem, or during the period of convalescence; if symptoms ofpneumonia had existed, we may take it for granted that the existing phthisis is the result of chronic pneumonia. This point isimportant on account of the remedies that have to be used ; for ithe last-mentioned case Sulphur, Hepar sulphuris, and Iodine arethe chief remedies, whereas in tubercular phthisis these remediesare of no higher importance than others. Chronic diarrhoea is likwise completely cured by means of Sulphur, likewise by means ofPhosphori acidum. Catarrhal conjunctivitis, if setting in in thestage of desquamation, is exceedingly obstinate. The conjunctivai^not very much thickened, but very red and unusually sensitiveto a glaring light as well as to intensely cold air. For this troArsenicum does more than any other remedy ; only it must not bediscontinued too soon, because the result generally develops itsevery tardily.8« Scarlatina.Scarlet-fever.Scarlatina is unquestionably a contagious disease; at times itoccurs in a sporadic, but more frequently in an epidemic form. What is the nature of this contagium, and what contains it, cannot be determined, but many circumstances argue in favor of thedoctrine that it is transmitted through the air. It is often indiputable and certainly more probable than in the case of measles, that scarlatina sometimes breaks out spontaneously and sporadically without any infectious contagium, and likewise epidemically,in which category belong the cases where scarlatina is said to habeen transmitted indirectly through the agency of non-affectedindividuals. It is difficult to determine the duration of the perScarlatina. 523of incubation ; it is generally supposed to last eight days. Thecontagium is most fiercely active soon after the appearance of thexanthem, during the period of desquamation the contagious natureof scarlatina has most probably become extinct. The susceptibilitto the influence of the scarlatina-contagium is much less generalthan that to the measle contagium; many persons escape scarlatinaaltogether. The largest number and the most malignant cases occurbetween the second and seventh year, a much smaller numberbetween the eight and twenty-fifth year. At a later period, as weas during infancy, scarlatina occurs very seldom. One attack of .scarlatina acts almost as an absolutely certain preventive againsan\^ subsequent attacks. Epidemic scarlatina most commonly prevails during the transition-seasons, less frequently m the summerand least frequently in winter.
