This remedy is most commonly suitable after the fever has been allayed by one of the previously metioned remedies, and the expectoration begins to become looseenough to enable the patient to cough up mucus. The cough isviolent, spasmodic ; it is excited by titillation low down in theby every irritating impression, especially by tobacco-smoke, afteeating, in the afternoon and after midnight ; the expectoration iscanty, yellowish and tinged with blood. "When coughing, there isviolent determination of blood to the head, turgescence of the faParoxysms of oppressed breathing, but no constant dyspnoea.Spongia is characterized by a hollow, barking, dry, seldom moistcough, continuing all day, and likewise all night in longdistressing paroxysms; at the same time labored, crowing, wheezininspirations, sometimes accompanied by rfiles. The remedy is mostappropriate for children, more particularly if the disease set inlaryngitis and gradually extended to the lungs. It Ib an excellenremedy in croupous bronchitis.Veratrum album is not often enough made use of in bronchitis. Itis not suitable in the first stage, but on the passage into the sstage, if mucns is secreted in copious quantities which cannot yebe coughed up. This causes a constant titillation deep in the chewith desire to cough, wheezing and coarse rfiles, but no expectortion, the distressing paroxysms of cough occur principally at nigwith violent determination of blood to the head. The general failing of strength, the increased frequency or even irregularity ofpulse constitute additional indications for Veratrum, which is evdently suitable to old people rather than children.Tartarua stiblatua of all other remedies enjoys the largest spherof action in pulmonary catarrh, and is preeminently characterizedby a profuse secretion of mucus which it is difficult to raise, wor without fever. This range of action is distinctly pointed outby the not very numerous, but significant lung-symptoms of Tartaremetic. Hence both the lighter and severer cases are adapted to tdrug, fine curative results of which are reported in our PeriodicThe lighter cases are not often met with among persons of middleage, more frequently among children and old people. In capillarybronchitis Tartar emetic is sometimes the only remedy from whichhelp may yet be expected, only it must not be given in too small17£ Diseases of the Lungs.doses nor large enough to produce eraesis. Symptoms of incipient poisoning by carbonic acid, such as sopor^ delirium, comawith pallor and bloat of the countenance and an unequal temperature of the body are appropriate indications for Tartar emetic, soedema of the lungs when similar symptoms prevail. Profuse sweatswithout relief, disposition to vomiting and diarrhcea, paroxysmsa rattling cough ending in vomiting, likewise indicate Tartar emeAll this shows that it is really the second stage of the catarrhaprocess which is adapted to the curative action of this drug whicacts very similarly to Veratrum album. These two drugs differprincipally in their phenomena of reaction which are very strikinand active under Veratrum, but very feeble under Tartar emetic.Hence Tartar emetic will often be found useful after Veratrum.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
