We hold that all treatment of the itch, as long as theacarus is not extirpated, is downright absurdityi It is our opinithat the cures of the itch which are reported as having been effeby the exclusive use of internal remedies, are not compatible witcorrectly scientific observation. The destruction of the acari is the causal indication which notonly can, but has to be satisfied. The most simple, never hurtfulproceeding and which never fails, if carefully carried out, is thfollowing: First the patient is placed in a water-bath of about92P F., in which he remains for half an hour. At the end of this• • • ■period of time he rubs himself well with brown soap, more particularly at the places where the acarus is principally located. Bythis means the cuniculi are almost completely opened. After thebath the patient is thoroughly dried and enveloped in a woollenblanket for a quarter or half an hour, for the purpose of removinevery particle of moisture from the skin and at the same timeenabling the ointment to thoroughly penetrate the cuniculi. Wenow resort to frictions with the following ointment: Two ouncesof lard, two drachms of the washed flowers of Sulphur, and halfa drachm of the Sulphuret of Lime. These proportions areabundantly sufficient for every adult. The whole body, except thehead and neck, has to be rubbed very carefully, especially the plthat constitute the favorite haunts of the acarus. The rubbing isbest done by two persons at once, one on each side. After therubbing, the patient is again enveloped in the woollen blankets, which he remains for an hour and a half. At the end of this perio512 Diseases of the Skin.he is placed in a warm bath of a temperature of 92P F. and, whilein the bath, thoroughly rubbed with brown soap. After the baththe patient may take ,a shower-bath, and be kept in the room forsome time longer in order to guard against taking cold. Aft^rsuch a proceeding which we have employed in a number of cases,we have never seen a relapse. The best method of cleansing theclothes as well as the bed-linen is to boil them at a temperature200° F.Under certain circumstances the proceeding here recommendedmay have to be somewhat modified. In a case of pustulous scabieswhich is so often met with among children, the pustules have toheal first, otherwise the soap would irritate the skin too much.According to their ages, children only require one-third, oneor one-half of the quantity of ointment, and, on account of theirskin being so much more tender, need not be kept in the baths, noremain in the blankets as long as adults. If several members of afamily are infected at the same time, they have to undergo thetreatment simultaneously. Frictions with brown soap alone arehardly suflScient to kill the acari; still they may be resorted ttwice a week in order to make doubly sure of the result. After the cure which does not cause any marked irritation ofthe skin, this organ is allowed about a fortnight for its restorahttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
