Even a violent excitement of the functionalactivity of the heart, as generally occurs at the commencement ofcardiac inflammation, is in characteristic accord with the flrstsymptoms of poisoning by Digitalis. Among all the various formsof cardiac inflammation, we consider the rheumatic form bestadapted to Digitalis, and likewise if it is associated with a copeff'usion of serum ; less, however, to pericarditis if the frictimurs continue unchanged from the beginning of the disease. Thesooner these murmurs disappear, the better is Digitalis adapted tthe case. In endocarditis it seems almost impossible to indicatespecial heart-symptoms requiring the use of Digitalis ; in such cthe constitutional symptoms will have to determine our choice. Inmyocarditis the doubtful character of the diagnosis will render ian especially difficult task to point out indications for the useDigitalis that have been confirmed by experience; one circumstancspeaks in favor of Digitalis which is, that in myocarditis the acof the heart is most suddenly weakened to an extraordinary degreeAmong the general symptoms the following invite more particularattention to the use of Digitalis: Rapidly-increasing dyspnoea, woccasional symptoms of acute congestion of the chest ; inflammatiof the pleura or lungs; bronchitis; chronic catarrh of the bronchexpectoration mixed, not streaked with blood; spasmodic cough.Livid, turgescent face with blue lips; headache, vertigo, deliriu862 Diseases of the Heart.Bopor. Yomiting at the commencement or during the course of thedisease ; hy persemia of the liver, slight icterus, catarrh of thneys. Excessive feeling of illness, not corresponding with the peceptible symptoms ; great anxiety, but without any continual restlessness. Aggravation by the slightest motion. A drawingpain in the left shoulder.Vepatrum album is one of the choicest cardiac remedies, althoughthis place has not yet been assigned to it by homoeopathic practitioners; the stage of functional excitement of the heart is stillmore apt to rapidly change to a state of paralytic weakness ; thepulse becomes very irregular, generally extremely rapid, small anfeeble ; -this change takes place although the alvine evacuationsmay not be by any means excessive, so that the heart-symptomshave to be regarded as the effect of direct action, not as resultfrom a highly acute anaemia. Veratrum is our first choice in acutcases, if the following general symptoms are present : Violent dypncea; constrictive sensation in the throat; constant short, dry, hacking cough., Bluish complexion, with an expression of deepprostration; sopor, stupefaction, excessive dulness and tightnessof the head. Vomiting and diarrhoea. Considerable diminution ofthe urinary secretion. Convulsive motions, more particularly of aclonic character. Cool, dissolving perspiration, with icy coldnesof the extremities. So far we have no clinical records confirmingthe homoBopathicity of Veratrum to heart-disease.Arsenicum album is frequently mentioned as a chief remedy in cardiac inflammations ; we confess, however, that we have never seenany good effects from it in acute aflections. It is a remarkablethat among the large number of cases of poisoning by Arsenic,post-mortem examinations have never yet revealed a single symphttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
