It is particularlyindicated by : Violent bone-pains, distention, swelling, rednessinteguments, and in general by the more acute symptoms of thedisease. However, we do not mean to deny its usefulness in chronicases of ostitis, and even in caries. The infantile organism is mrapidly and certainly afiected by Mercurius. The dose had betterbe as small as possible ; the slow course of the disease would seto point to small doses and given at comparatively long intervalsas preferable to large doses of this agent.Mezereum antidotes Mercurius in the bone-range ; this alone showsthat both remedies must be homoeopathic to ostitii^. Mezereum isparticularly adapted to periostitis, less to ostitis, and is partappropriate at a period of the disease when no complete suppuratihas yet set in. With this remedy we have cured an inflammationof the tibia, where a portion of the bone, several inches in extewas considerably and painfully distended ; the patient was a bey^whom there could not have existed the remotest suspicion of somespecific cause. We cannot point out a special loeaKty for Mezereuaccording to Hartmann, it is particularly the superficially situabones to inflammatory conditions of which Mezereum is bestadapted. [This may have been a case of scrofulous rheumaticinflammation ; in the couree of our practice we have cured quitenumber of such cases by means of Aconite^ Belladonna^ the Iodideof Mercury J likewise Iodine and Iodide of Potassium. H.]Aoidum nitricum is indeed chiefly indicated in mercurial ostitis,[and in ostitis originating in syphilis and abuse of Mercury, H.]yet this recommendation must not be understood too literally; forthis agent may likewise be of use in other forms of ostitis, espeof the lower extremities, and in periostitis generally.Phosphor! aoidum is generally preferred to Acidum nitricum innon-mercurial ostitis; it is indicated in the inflammatory boneaflTections of children, especially in inflammations of the verteif there is an evident disposition to caries and ichorous dissoluIn fully developed caries with symptoms of slow hectic fever,Phosphori acidum is one of the most important remedies.Phosphorus is inferior to Phosphori acidum for the reason thatthe latter acts more specifically and more penetratingly in chronafifections. In other respects the therapeutic sphere of both remOstitis, Periostitis. 415edies is very similar; we would accord the preference to Phosphorif consumption with unceasing colliquative diarrhoea has set in.Staphysagria is indicated, if the ostitis runs its course with sepains, and the bone and its periosteum are aftected at the sametime ; in the case of scrofulous individuals ; if the facial bonethose of the legs and feet are involved.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
