Bryonia may be sufficient in thlower grades of this fever, but the higher grades require: Rhustoxicod. y Phosphorus, Digitalis, Veratrum album.; the two lastremedies correspond more particularly to the frequent and smallpulse with cerebral symptoms resembling typhus. Ammoniumcarbon, may deserve a preference, if the pulse accompanying thecerebral symptoms is not excessively rapid. Zincum is likewiserecommended in such cases. If a sudden disappearance of the redness is attended with ominous symptoms; if a general paralysisthreatens, Camphora should be resorted to. The special symptomatic indications of these various remedies can be learnt fromthe Materia Medica Pura. The angina, even if only of an erythematous character, is sometimes intense, and Belladonna does not seem to have the least effupon it. In such a case Apis not uufrequently mitigates the severpain. If we may judge by the provings, this agent must be animportant remedy in scarlet-fever ; the clinical record of this d34^'/r ,/'.' ^530 Acute and Chronic Contagious Diseases.is still very scanty. Whether Apis will prevent the inflammationfrom penetrating to the deeper tissues, has not yet been decided. If the angina is accompanied by swelling of the tonsils, Mercuriishould be given ; this remedy often arrests all further progressthis feature of the disease. If the angina is confined to the tonit will seldom be found necessary to give Hepar^iov the reason thno suppuration generally sets in. If suppuration takes place, Hepsvlphuris cede, should be resorted to without delay. If the inflamation invades the cervical cellular tissue and the cervical glanwhich it may do while Mercurius is being exhibited, in which casethis remedy is no longer indicated, Bryonia may be given. We donot advise a premature lancing of the abscess, because such aproceeding would undoubtedly favor an ichorous decomposition. For chronic suppuration we recommend Silicea^ior subsequent indurations Baryta and Sulphur*A malignant form of angina requires the same treatment asdiphtheritis. Iodine has frequently rendered excellent service inthis aflfection ; Acidum muriaticum is likewise commended ; but,we said before, such recommendations are not always to be dependeupon in all cases, for the reason that one remedy will do betterone epidemic, and the very next epidemic may require a differenttreatment. A scarlatina-coryza sometimes requires a peculiar treament; it often remains even after the diphtheritic angina is cureAurum muriaticum is the most reliable remedy for it; Sepia orCalcarea carbon, is less so.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
