Full text of "The Science of Therapeutics: According to the Principles of Homeopath...Page 235 of 653present epidemic we use Mercurius soluhilis; although we do notobject to the Sublimate by way of experiment, yet Hahnemann'spreparation is so excellent in this disease that one hesitates toperiment with any other drug. As regards dose, we have foundthe third and fourth triturations the most useful ; higher attenutions are of no use whatever.Phosphorus. Fleishmann, of Vienna, the passionate advocate ofPhosphorus in pneumonia, went so far as to assert that a pneumonia which cannot be cured with Phosphorus, cannot be curedhomoBopathically. He has been bitterly assailed for making thisstatement; yet we must admit that the period when Phosphorusought to be administered in pneumonia, can easily be inferred frohis arguments. We understand the case as follows. A simplePneumonia. 273croupous pneumonia in very many cases nins to a favorable termination without any medicine, and, even if not indicated. Phosphorus, when given in a veiy small dose, will not interfere withnormal course of the disease; hut if deviations from the normalcourse take place, Phosphorus will most generally prove the correremedy. We cannot, in this place, discuss the various views concerning this important remedy, and, for particulars, we refer thereader to Sorge's treatise on Phosphorus, where a full expose ofthese views may be found. On the other hand, we cannot altogether share the opinions which Sorge has expressed in his brochure. Supported by at least a hundred and fifty eases of pneumonnot one of which terminated fatally in our hands, we are bound toassign to Phosphorus a much larger sphere of action than Sorgeseems willing to allow. Sorge only allows a therapeutic sphere foPhosphorus corresponding to its physiological action upon thelungs as far as this action has been determined by actual experimentation ; we fancy, however, that this sort of exclusiveness wicompel us to treat many cases of disease without Similia, and itour decided opinion that practical trials, based upon suggestionsderived from the Materia Medica, ought to have great and decisiveweight. Among the symptoms of Phosphorus we find but fewprominent kinds of pains, except vaguely localized stitches, a moor less marked embarrassment of the respiration, a bloody, mucosanguinolent, or sanguineo-purulent, badly-colored, difficult exptoration, and a decided exacerbation of the symptoms towardsevening and during the night. Adding to this the post-mortemresults: Severe hypersemia of single lobes, more or less extensivhepatized portions of the lungs, and, according to Bibra, distinctuberculization of the exuded fibrin, we are abundantly authorized to believe in the homoeopathicity of Phosphorus in pneumoniaTo these local symptoms the general symptoms of Phosphorus haveto be added, these two are mostly full of meaning, but we shallhave to leave their more particular examination to the reader's ojudgment. Backed by the pathogenetic effects and by numerouspractical, indisputable observations at the sick-bed, we recommenl^hosphorus in the following more special cases :If pneumonia sets in at the outset with the symptoms of adynamic fever and bears a close resemblance to typhus. Here Aconitewould not even be suitable at the beginning of the treatment,Belladonna would do better, and Jthus toxicodendron still better,http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
