In the interior othe tissues we frequently discover infiltrations with dissolvedhsematin.Utiology. In most cases septicaemia proceeds from gangrenedlocalities or is occasioned by local processes of decomposition otransformation into ichor. Not unfrequently it is the consequenceof contagious or miasmatic influences, as in the plague, dysenteretc. Or it may arise by the decomposition of substances thatought to have been excreted but remain behind in the organism,as in acute gastric and intestinal catarrhs, ichorous exudations,In many cases the etiological origin of the disease remains unknown, in which case the septic infection of the blood has to beexclusively ascribed to the genius epidemicus or to endemicinfluences with which we are unacquainted.Symptoms* The septic condition sets in with or withoutprecursory symptoms. The precursory symptoms consist inweariness and heaviness of the body; in dull headache accompanied by a sense of dreariness, dulness and apathetic indifferenin restless and unrefreshing sleep; in dull, wandering pains in tlimbs; in pressure at the stomach and in the loins; in loss ofappetite with a sensation of repletion, and with an insipid, bittor foul taste ; in frequent chills with fugitive heat and occasiooutbreak of sweat; in the secretion of strong-smelling urine andSepticaemia. 783alvine evacuations having a foul odor. These symptoms havingcontinued for a shorter or longer period, and sometimes withoutany preliminary symptoms, a violent chill sets in followed by amoderate or intense fever-heat. Most generally the septic symptoms onlymake their appearance after the patients have become debilitatedand apathetic to such an extent that they faint away when theleast attempt is made to raise them or change their position. Thefirst sign of septic decomposition is the fetor of the mouth; thebreath and the bodily exhalations likewise spread a putrid odor,so that, whenever the patient raises the bed-cover by his motion,a sickening stench affects the nostrils.
