Thabsence of fresh vegetables deprives the system of the acids whicare necessary to the nutrition of the organism; these are citric, tartaric, acetic, lactic and malic acids which form carbonates insystem by entering into combination with alkalies. " When weinquire," says Dr. Parkes, " whether there is any proof of the deciency of these particular acids and salts from the diets which cscurvy, we find the strongest evidence not only that this is thecase, but that their addition to the diet cures scurvy with greatcertainty. Tartaric, and especially citric acid, when combined wialkalies, have always been considered the anti-scorbutic remediespar excellence^ and the evidence on this point seems very complet"Of the vegetable anti-scorbutics," writes Clymer in his Americanedition of Aitken, "the potato enjoys, and probably deservedly, thighest reputation; sailors cut it in slices, which they pack inmolasses ; next to it are onions, sliced and eaten raw ; which argreedily devoured by scurvy-patients. Cabbage in the form of sourkrout, sorrel, the wild artichoke, the maguey or American aloe, tprickly pear, the dandelion, lamb's-quarter, green corn, the yam, apples, have all been found excellent anti-scorbutics. Uncookedfruits and vegetables are more efficient than cooked in the prevetion and cure of scurvy."652 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.Dr. Parkes recommends Citrates, Tartrates, Lactates, and Malatosof Potash, as drinks, or as additions to the food. Most of the above statements have been taken from Aitken,Watson, and from Parkes' work on the pathology and treatmentof scurvy, to which we therefore refer for more extensive information. At any rate we do not desire topresent an imperfect definition of the disease, and we thereforetent ourselves with stating that scrofulosis is a disease of theperiod of development, the presence of which is manifested by morbid conditions of a peculiar character, more particularly in theglands, skin and bones.Scrofulosis may be inherited from scrofulous parents, whose disease is not necessarily, but in a majority of cases, reproduced ithe children. It may likewise be regarded as an inherited diseaseif the parents were affected with some chronic disorder (more espcially the mother during pregnancy), such as tuberculosis, constitional syphilis, malarial cachexia, mercurialism. Finally there ievery reason why scrofulosis should be regarded as inherited, whethe disease breaks out among the offspring of marriages betweennear relatives, and after such marriages had been continued forseveral generations.Scrofulosis may likewise be acquired by exposure to influencesthat continually impair the process of nutrition.
