Femim,whether it is used as a medicinal preparation or as mineral waterhas to be administered with a good deal <strong>of</strong> caution. If the patienshow an extreme disposition to pulmonary hypersemia, they arevery sensitive to the action <strong>of</strong> Iron ; any dose <strong>of</strong> unusual size etheir circulation and makes them cough up blood. Since this resulis principally owing to the dose, we have a ready explanation whythe Old School has been so averse to prescribing Iron in tuberculIf it is given in small doses, not below the second trituration,shall very speedily notice good effects from the drug, if it is aistered for the following symptoms and conditions : Pale complexiwith disposition to a change <strong>of</strong> color, or with a yellowish tint ;deficient appetite, or perverse cravings, with disposition to paithe stomach, and constipation ; frequent palpitations <strong>of</strong> the hearand transitory congestions <strong>of</strong> the lungs ; disproportionate musculdebility; lassitude from the least unusual motion; irritability otemper excited by the least unpleasant impressions. <strong>The</strong> indicati<strong>of</strong>or Calcarea do not differ much from those <strong>of</strong> Iron. <strong>The</strong> patientshave a florid appearance, their cheeks are very much flushed, theskin being at the same time very delicate; they are apt to compla<strong>of</strong> congestive headache; they have an excitable disposition andsanguine temperament ; at times they digest their food very regularly, at other times they are troubled with diarrhoea ; unless tare under some special excitement, the patients complain <strong>of</strong> weakness, although, when in pleasant company, no sign <strong>of</strong> weakness isperceptible ; the sexual system is very active, the menses are prfuse and set in prematurely and with acute pains.Under the operation <strong>of</strong> these two drugs, the use <strong>of</strong> which oughtto be discontinued sometimes for a week at a time, we sometimessee the whole disease arrested or even retrograde ; <strong>of</strong> course, thpatients have to be very particular in observing the strictest diWe need not suppose that these two remedies produce their favorable effect simply by promoting the general nutrition, since they<strong>of</strong>ten effect a favorable change even at a later stage <strong>of</strong> the diseChina and Arsenicum are two remedies that can likewise be usedat the beginning <strong>of</strong> the tuberculous process, although they are lereliable than the former. China is indicated if the pulmonary afftion seems to constitute the whole difficulty, but still more, ifcommences with the symptoms <strong>of</strong> a severe hypersemia <strong>of</strong> the liver,and if the patients very soon show a cachectic appearance. It iawell known how <strong>of</strong>ten pains in the liver constitute symptoms <strong>of</strong>Tuberculosis. 675tuberculosis, and liow <strong>of</strong>ten such patients were formerly sent toCarlsbad to return home again in a dying condition. Arsenicumalbum has only been employed by us for tuberculosis in the last fyears; the cases where Arsenicum is indicated, are too few to enans to express a positive opinion on its therapeutic value at thistime.
