Digitalis is eminently useful if the attacks are gradually changing icharacter, and have lasted a good while; in such transitions tochronic gout Digitalis is scarcely ever surpassed by any other reedy ; but it must not be given in too small a dose. The first favable change effected by Digitalis is the supervention of a shortsleep. Ledum responds to the imperfect, long-lasting paroxysmsinvolving the carpal and shoulder-joints. Baryta is adapted toaffections of the knee.The treatment of the whole disease is more important than thatof a single attack, which is always somewhat precarious. Many other mineral waters are recommended, and thepatients improve by the use of all of them, but no more, generallspeaking, than they would have done without drinking the water,provided they had strictly adhered to the severe regimen enforcedat the springs.4.
