C, laboring under his fourth attack <strong>of</strong> delirium tremens,under the care <strong>of</strong> a Doctor who had treated him in the oldway, with Opium and Digitalis, had passed seven nights withoutsleep.On visiting the patient on the morning <strong>of</strong> the eighth day, I foundhim quietly brushing the vermin from his clothing, and occasionalordering the nurses to clear the room from the strange animals whwere in every corner, and under every chair. His pulse was fair,tongue but lightly coated, skin moist and warm, appetite good, fasomewhat flushed. <strong>The</strong> attack, and all former attacks had commenced with severe vertigo. His eyes were injected, bowels loose,owing to purgatives. I ordered rest from all medicines, strongsoup, and oysters with an abundance <strong>of</strong> Cayenne pepper throughthe day ; at 8 o'clock at night I administered one drachm <strong>of</strong> theBromide <strong>of</strong> Potassium to be followed, if necessary, every hour byone half the quantity. <strong>The</strong> dose had to be repeated but once, aquiet sleep being obtained for twelve hours.Five months subsequently C. C. again suffered for the fifth time,and for three days I used every endeavor to obtain sleep. <strong>The</strong>Bromide which had before acted so effectually, failing entirely.the fourth night, however, sleep was obtained after the use <strong>of</strong> la.doses <strong>of</strong> Opium and Tartar emetic; recovery followed immediately.An habitual drunkard <strong>of</strong> great capacity, having already sufferedfrom many attacks <strong>of</strong> delirium tremens, after, according to hisRoseola, Rubeolx. 465own and his friends* accounts, abstaining from food for some weeksubsisting entirely upon liquors <strong>of</strong> which he took a great varietyand an incredible quantity, was attacked with a very severe formdelirium tremens. <strong>The</strong> prostration was extreme, the tremor excessive, but the delirium bland, the chief hallucination being thatceiling was about' to fall and crush him, rendering it necessaryhim to jump from the bed and hop around the room with as greatactivity as his weak condition would allow. His tongue was heavilcoated, pulse small and irregular, skin moist, the forehead beingconstantly bedewed with a cold, clammy sweat.
